Bears shut out at #3 Gulf Coast

The 3rd-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs scored the only points they would need on their opening drive then added three more scores and went on to shutout the visiting Southwest Bears 28-0 Thursday night in Perkinston.

With the loss, the Bears fell to 1-4 on the year and 1-3 in the MACJC South Division. The Bulldogs remained undefeated at 6-0 and 4-0.

The hosts held a 14-0 lead at the break, scoring on their first and last possessions of the half. The initial score came on a seven-yard Tevaris McCormick run and the last on a four yard, Thad Miller to Tyrone Williams touchdown pass. Tristan Reynolds added both extra points.

The Bulldogs got on the board on their opening possession of the second half when Chris Robinson closed out an 11-play, 86-yard march with a six-yard touchdown run with 10:15 showing on the clock. Reynolds booted the extra point to make the score 21-0 after the third quarter.

The Bulldogs took advantage of an interception to score the final points of the night. Taking the ball on the Bears' 43-yard line, Robinson dashed 43 yards for the touchdown. Reynolds added the PAT to close out the scoring.

Chris Jones paced the Bears' offense with 125 rushing yards on 19 carries. De' Angelo Ballard toted the ball 15 times for 85 yards while Tyler Shell and LaDarion Peterson also carried the ball.

Ballard and Shell combined to complete seven of 18 passes for 51 yards. Ballard was picked off once. Jonathan McNair caught two passes for 25 yards while Shuntez Smith caught two for 16 yards. Jones, Kelvin Williams and Ladarrius Slocum had one reception each.

Despite having a good night rushing the ball, Southwest head coach Tucker Peavey said after the game, "The truth is, we were awful throwing and catching the ball. You can't be one-dimensional and expect to beat anybody, much less a team like Gulf Coast. They had bigger, faster athletes than we did but we didn't make the plays that were there when we could have."

"(Our) defense stayed on the field too much," Peavey went on, "because we didn't put enough stress on them (Gulf Coast) by scoring touchdowns. We gave up some big plays, but at the end of the day we've got to get better on offense if we expect to win."

The Bears registered 16 first downs in the game and were penalized six times for 60 yards. Brandon Mancuso punted six times for 32.8 yards.

The Bulldogs picked up 303 yards on the ground. Robinson led the way with 147 yards, and two touchdowns, on 22 carries. McCormick had a score and 82 yards on four carries.

Miller completed 14 of 24 passes for 149 yards, with a touchdown toss to Williams. Including the touchdown catch, Williams had eight receptions for 75 yards.

The Bulldogs picked up 24 first downs in the game and were whistled for 105 yards on 10 penalties. Kevin Phillips averaged 41 yards on two punts.

Southwest stays on the road for its next contest as the Bears travel to Clarksdale on October 9 to face the Coahoma Tigers. Kickoff is set for 7:00 at James E. Miller Stadium.
