Bears drop a pair at Pearl River

Collin Carroll’s performance at the plate in game one and Trace Robinson’s on the mound in game two were not enough for the Southwest Bears Tuesday as they dropped an MACJC South Division doubleheader at Pearl River, falling 8-5 and 2-1.

Carroll went 3-4 with four runs batted in and one scored in the opener while Robinson scattered six hits over six innings in the finale, giving up only one earned run while striking out four batters and walking only two.

Pearl River (25-9, 8-4) took a 3-0 lead in the first inning in game one when a Krisjon Wilkerson double sent two runners to the plate. He then later scored on a two-out Southwest error.

The Bears (12-20, 3-9) closed the gap to 3-2 in their half of the third when Brandon Austin led off with the first of his two singles in the game and later scored on Carroll’s hit to left field. Marvin Van Buren also scored on the play. The Wildcats then added three more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and a solo run in the sixth to extend their lead to 8-2.

Southwest gave their fans reason for hope in with two outs in the top of the seventh. With one out, Logan Ferrell singled to center field. Later, with two outs, Ferrell scored ahead of Van Buren on Carroll’s third hit of the game to make the score 8-4. Carroll then scored on a Pearl River error, making the score 8-5. That, however, proved to be as close as the Bears could get as Pearl River retired the final batter to end the game.

Jesse Travis went 3.2 innings on the mound in taking the loss for the Bears. Surrendering six hits, Travis allowed seven runs in the game. But, due to four Southwest errors, only two of the runs were earned. He struck out one batter while walking four. Chase Ladd finished the game on the mound, giving up one run on two hits. He, too, struck out one batter while issuing four bases on balls.

Kendric Hodges, Andrew Hulbert and Kade Scivicque all hit safely for the Bears.

Game two was a pitcher’s duel with neither side able to produce any runs through the first four innings. The Bears finally managed to scratch across a run in the top of the fifth to go up 1-0. Patric Devlin led off the inning for the Bears with a walk. Moving to second on Zach Jones’ sacrifice bunt, he then moved to third on a Hulbert ground out and scored on a throwing error by the Pearl River shortstop.

In a wild bottom of the sixth, the Wildcats scored two runs on a base hit, walk, wild pitch and two Southwest errors with two outs to take a 2-1 lead.

The Bears had a chance to extend the game in the bottom of the top of the seventh, with Anthony Durr on second via a Pearl River error and Devlin sacrifice bunt. But, a close play at first base went the way of the home team and the game ended with the Wildcats on top.

Southwest was held to two hits in the game. A third-inning single by Austin extended his hitting streak to 10 games, the second such streak of the year for the sophomore second baseman. Scivicque also hit safely.

Southwest will return to the field Saturday when they travel to Ellisville to face Jones County. The first pitch of game one is set for 3:00.
