Lady Bears drop a pair at 8th-ranked Mississippi Gulf Coast

The Southwest softball team dropped a pair of South Division games on the road in Perkinston Tuesday as Mississippi Gulf Coast won the opener 5-2 and the finale 6-1.

The losses dropped the Lady Bears to 18-24 overall and 8-14 in the South. Division-leading Gulf Coast, ranked 8th in the latest NJCAA poll, climbed to 31-8 and 20-4.

Gulf Coast picked up three runs in the bottom of the third and two in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead on the Lady Bears in game one. Southwest tallied its runs in the top of the seventh when Miranda Smith scored from third on an error. Kristen Gekler, on base via a single, later scored on a single by Amy Lea.

Rachel Smith pitched six innings in taking the loss for Southwest. She gave up five runs, all unearned, on four hits while striking out nine and walking three. Carrie Phillips had a base hit in the game.

Game two went much like the first. Gulf Coast scored four in the first and two in the sixth to go up 6-0 before the Lady Bears got on the board. Amy Lea walked with the bases loaded, scoring Katie Allen, to help Southwest avoid the shutout.

Phillips gave up four runs on four hits and two walks in 0.2 innings to take the loss for the Lady Bears. Marissa Jenkins had two singles for Southwest while Gekler, Lea and Phillips also hit safely.

The Lady Bears close out the season Saturday when they travel to Hinds Community College for a 12:00 doubleheader.
