Lady Bears sweep Hinds, 8-0 and 1-0

The Southwest Lady Bears swept an MACJC South Division doubleheader from visiting Hinds Tuesday afternoon, winning the opener 8-0 and the finale 1-0.
 
With the wins, the Lady Bears evened their overall record to 15-15 on the year. They are 5-7 in the Division. Hinds fell to 4-26 and 0-12.
 
Southwest took a 2-0 first-inning lead in game one when Katie Allen singled then moved to third on a Harley Myers double and finally scored on a wild pitch. Myers was sent home on a Kristen Gekler base hit.
 
The Lady Bears added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth to go up 6-0. Mary Margaret McLaurin blasted a one-out home run to center field that also scored Grace Bravata. With two outs, Myers lined a single to right field that sent Marisa Pruski and Chelsea Nette to the plate.
 
 The score went to 7-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Marissa Jenkins walked with the bases loaded to score Miranda Smith from third. A wild pitch then allowed McLaurin to reach the plate with the game-ending run.
 
Rachel Smith gave up only two hits in five innings in picking up the win for Southwest. She struck out three batters while walking only one.
 
In addition to her homer, McLaurin also singled in the game. Bravata singled twice while Brie Harper, Chelsea Nette, Pruski and Carrie Phillips all had one single.
 
Southwest picked up the only run they would need in the bottom of the fourth of game two when Harper singled to drive Miranda Smith to the plate.
 
Rachel Smith pitched four innings, giving up only one hit, to record the win. She struck out one batter and walked one. Phillips pitched the final three innings to get the save. She allowed three hits while striking out one.
 
Harper and Nette both had two singles in the game. Bravata, Gekler, McLaurin and Phillips also singled.
 
Southwest stays at home for their next games as they host Pearl River in a 1:00 doubleheader on Saturday.
