Bears sweep at Co-Lin

The Southwest Bears picked up two huge MACJC South Division wins Wednesday over arch-rival Co-Lin in Wesson, winning the opener 11-9 in 11 innings completing the sweep with a 7-2 victory in the nightcap. The games marked the final round of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge presented by Powerade.
 
The sweep puts the Bears (18-22, 7-11) right in the middle of the race for the playoffs and will give Saturday’s home doubleheader against Mississippi Gulf Coast a playoff-like atmosphere. Gulf Coast (21-17, 8-10), in fourth place in the Division, is currently one game ahead of the Bears. The top four teams from each division advance to the playoffs. The Bears will host Gulf Coast beginning at 2:00.
 
Co-Lin (16-23, 5-15) took a 2-0 lead in game one when Dylan Anglin blasted a two-run homer over the left field wall in the bottom of the second inning. The Bears knotted the game at 2-2 in the top of the third when Logan Ferrell singled to left and later scored on a wild pitch and Marvin Van Buren scored on an Anthony Durr ground out. Co-Lin picked up a solo homer from Matt Smith in the bottom of the third to go regain the lead at 3-2.
 
Southwest picked up three runs in their half of the fifth to go on top 5-3. Kendric Hodges singled with one out, moved to third on a Durr double. Both then scored on Patric Devlin’s hit to left. Moving to third on a play at the plate, Devlin stole third and scored on a Drew Jones single past second base. Co-Lin then added a solo homer from Gabe Wilson to make the score 5-4 in the bottom of frame.
 
The Bears added two more in the top of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead. Ferrell led off the inning with a solo shot over the fence in left, his third hit of the day and, with two outs, Hodges sent a pitch over the right-field fence. Another homer in the bottom of the inning for Co-Lin made the score 7-5.
 
The score moved to 8-5 in the top of the seventh when Devlin reached on a lead-off walk for Southwest and later scored on a passed ball. Co-Lin forced extra innings when they tied the game with three runs in the bottom of the seventh on Jonathan Santana’s three-run homer.
 
Both teams scored a run in the ninth inning. Devlin led off the Bears’ half of the frame with his third hit of the game and later scored on a passed ball. For Co-Lin, the run came via a Santana single.
 
The final runs of the game came in the top of the 11th inning when Brandon Austin singled and scored on Kade Scivicque’s double to left. After reaching on a fielder’s choice, Ferrell scored on a close play at the plate when Collin Carroll made it to first on a dropped third strike.
 
Scivicque picked up the win in relief for Southwest. He allowed four runs, three earned, on seven hits while striking out five and walking one. Starter Trace Robinson went six innings, allowing five runs on nine hits. He struck out three. Andrew Hulbert had two singles for Southwest while Durr also hit safely.
 
The Bears took a 2-0 second inning lead in game two when a Zach Jones base hit sent Carroll and Devlin to the plate. Carroll led off the inning with a walk while Devlin was on due to a fielder’s choice. Co-Lin picked up a run in their half of the inning to make the score 2-1.
 
Southwest extended its lead to 5-1 in the top fourth inning. Hodges singled, Durr walked and Zach Jones walked to load the bases. Hulbert then lined a double, scoring Hodges and Durr. Advancing to third on the hit, Jones then raced home on a throw to second base. A Konner Burke sacrifice fly gave Co-Lin a run in the bottom of the inning to make the score 5-2.
 
The Bears made it 6-2 in the sixth inning when Devlin reached on an error and scored and later scored on another Co-Lin miscue. Southwest then picked up the final run of the game in the seventh Van Buren scored on Hodges’ single to center.
 
Jesse Travis scattered six hits over six innings on the mound to pick up the win for Southwest. Allowing two runs, he struck out seven while issuing four bases on balls. J. D. Stockstill struck out one and walked one in one inning of relief. Carroll, Ferrell and Hulbert all had singles in the game.
