Bears split with East Central

A wild pitch with two outs and the bases loaded allowed Zach Jones to score from third base and give the Southwest Bears a 3-2, 10-inning victory over visiting East Central in game one of their Saturday doubleheader. East Central bounced back to gain the split with a 14-2 win in the nightcap.

The Bears (16-22, 5-11) took a 1-0 lead in the first inning of the opener. Second baseman Brandon Austin led off the frame with a single, moved to second on Logan Ferrell’s ground out then scored on Kade Scivicque’s base hit. They went up 2-0 in the third when Kendric Hodges doubled with one out and scored two batters later on an Anthony Durr single.

Southwest kept the 2-0 lead until the top of the seventh when East Central (20-17, 12-6) scored two, on a controversial catcher’s interference call, with the bases loaded, and a sacrifice fly. The Bears put a runner on base in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to score.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the tenth when, with two outs, the Bears loaded the bases. With Austin on first via a walk, East Central relief pitcher Mason Woodrow made an errant throw on a pickoff attempt, allowing Jones to scamper home with the winning run.

Scivicque picked up the win in relief, giving up only a hit in 3.2 innings of work. He struck out three. Dylan Gregoire pitched an excellent game through 6.1 innings, but did not figure in the decision. He allowed two unearned runs on four hits and struck out three batters.

Austin added a second single to his first-inning hit. Collin Carroll, Andrew Hulbert and Jones also hit safely.

The Bears were limited to a double by Ferrell and Carroll’s single in dropping game two. They picked up their first run in the third when Ferrell led off with his hit and later scored on Hodge’s ground out. The second run came in the fourth when Drew Jones reached on a one-out walk and later scored when Austin reached base on a dropped third strike.

Kyle Crifasi went 1.2 innings on the mound in getting the loss for Southwest. He gave up five runs, one earned, on two hits while striking out one and walking two. Colton Lee, J. D. Stockstill and Jared Simon also saw action on the mound.

Southwest returns to action Wednesday when they travel to Wesson to face arch-rival Co-Lin in the final round of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge presented by Powerade. Game one is set for 3:00.
