Lady Bears drop two close ones at Baton Rouge CC

It was a tough day for the Southwest Lady Bears as they dropped a pair of road games at Baton Rouge Community College Tuesday afternoon falling 1-0 in the opener and 6-5 in the nightcap. The second game was decided in eight innings.

Southwest returns to MACJC South Division play Saturday when they travel to Ellisville for a 2:00 doubleheader at 4th-ranked Jones County.

Offense was at a premium in the first game Tuesday. The Lady Bears (16-18) were limited to two hits, singles by Chelsea Nette and Carrie Phillips. Baton Rouge (23-21) was held to six hits. The only run of the game came in the sixth inning. With two outs and the bases loaded, the home plate umpire called an illegal pitch which forced the runner home from third base.

Phillips took the loss for Southwest, going six innings. She struck out two batters and walked one.

A base hit and a hit batter allowed BRCC to take a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of game two. The Lady Bears answered, and tied the game at 1-1, in the top of the third when Nette reached second on a two-out error and scored on Brie Harper’s base hit.

The score moved to 4-1, in favor of Southwest, in the fifth inning. After reaching second on another BRCC error, Marisa Pruski scored on Nette’s single. Nette then scored when Harper blasted a home run to center field.

Two base hits, a walk, and a sacrifice fly allowed BRCC to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh, tying the game at 4-4 and forcing the game into an eighth inning.

Southwest took a 5-4 lead in the top of the seventh when Mandie Szigeti, starting the inning on second per international rules, moved to third on Harley Myer’s ground out and scored on a Kristen Gekler sacrifice fly. A base hit and sacrifice fly then helped BRCC win the game with two runs in the bottom of the frame.

Phillips, pitching in relief of Rachel Smith, took the game-two loss for the Lady Bears. She gave up two runs and a hit in 1.2 innings. Smith went 6.1 innings, giving up four runs on five hits while striking out three and walking five.

Nette also had a triple in the game while Mary Margaret McLaurin and Myers also hit safely.
