Bears take two from Coahoma

The long trip home from Clarksdale was made much easier for the Southwest Bears Tuesday as they brought home a doubleheader sweep of host Coahoma. The Bears took the opener 8-1 while completing the sweep with a 12-3 win in the finale.

The Bears return to action Saturday when they host the East Central Warriors in a MACJC South Division doubleheader. Game one is set for a 2:00 first pitch.

Southwest took a 1-0 third-inning lead in the opener when Brandon Austin reached base on a two-out walk, stole second then scored on Logan Ferrell’s single to right field.

The score went to 5-0 in the fourth inning. Patric Devlin’s single to left field scored Kendric Hodges from third base. A Drew Jones base hit to right field sent Collin Carroll and Anthony Durr to the plate and Andrew Hulbert’s second hit of the game, a single to center field, allowed Devlin to reach home.

A pair of Coahoma errors allowed Carroll to reach base and score in the fifth inning to extend the Bears’s lead to 6-0. Coahoma then picked up their only run of the game in the bottom of the frame on a single by JeDerek Hardy.

Southwest (15-21) tallied the final runs of the game in the top of the seventh when a bases-loaded walk to Devlin scored Hodges from third base and a Jones sacrifice fly allowed Carroll to make it home.

Coahoma (3-25) took a 3-1 lead in the bottom of the second before the Bears exploded for six runs in the top of the third to go ahead 7-3.

In the third, Ferrell scored on a single by Hodges. Two batters later, a bases-loaded walk to Frank Rodriguez went Carroll to the plate. The next batter, Devlin, reached on an error to send Hodges, Van Buren and Rodriguez to the plate. Devlin then scored on an error by the Coahoma catcher.

A Carroll single in the fourth scored Austin and Van Buren scored on Devlin’s ground out in the fifth to give the Bears a 9-3 lead. They added their final runs in the sixth inning when Cody Berryhill lined a two-out, bases-loaded double to left field that scored Ferrell, Carroll and Hodges.
