Lady Bears drop South Division openers

South Division play got off to a rough start for the Southwest Lady Bears Saturday afternoon as they dropped a pair of games to home standing Pearl River, 7-3 and 8-0.
 
With the losses, the Lady Bears fall to 10-10 on the season and 0-2 in the Division. Pearl River moved up to 11-6, 2-0.

Southwest got on the board first in game one when Chelsea Nette led off the game with a single. She then moved to second on Harley Myers’ sacrifice bunt before reaching the plate on a hit by Carrie Phillips. Two hits and a Southwest error in the bottom of the first allowed the Lady Wildcats to take a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
 
The Lady Bears tied the game at 2-2 in their half of the third inning when lead-off batter Mary Margaret McLaurin reached base on an error. Nette then followed with an RBI double to left center field.
 
A solo run in the fourth and two more in the fifth gave Pearl River a 5-2 lead. The Lady Bears made it 5-3 in the top of sixth when Mandie Szigeti’s RBI single allowed Amy Lea to score from second. That was as close as Southwest would get as the home team scored two more in the bottom of the sixth.
 
Miranda Smith gave up four runs in 2.1 innings in relief of Carrie Phillips to take the loss for Southwest. She surrendered three hits, struck out one and walked one. Phillips was touched for three runs on six hits. She struck out a batter and walked two.
 
Grace Bravata had two singles for Southwest. Katie Allen also hit safely.
 
Pearl River would get all the runs they would need with four in the first inning of game two. The big blow was a three-run homer to left field from Kelsea Lewis. The Lady Wildcats would add another run in the second, one in the fourth and two more in the fifth to take the win.  
Rachel Smith gave up six runs six runs on five hits to take the loss. She struck out three batters while walking five. Kristen Gekler closed out the game, surrendering two runs on a hit and two walks.
 
Szigeti had a double for the Lady Bears while Allen, Myers and Phillips all singled.
 
Southwest returns to South Division play on March 16 when they host Jones County for a 1:00 doubleheader.
