Bears split a pair of 7-5 games at Mississippi Delta

The Southwest Bears made the long trip to Moorhead Thursday and came away with a split with home standing Mississippi Delta. The Bears picked up a 7-5 win in the nightcap after falling by the same score in the opener.

The Bears picked up outstanding performances by starting pitchers Caleb Crumpler and Dylan Gregoire as well as third baseman Derek Lacoste.

Gregoire threw 5.2 innings, giving up four hits and four runs (none earned) while striking out five and walking only one to claim the win in game two. Crumpler had a no-decision in the opener despite surrendering only three hits in 5.2 innings. He struck out five batters while walking four and giving up four hits and runs. Lacoste went 6-8 at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored and three runs batted in.

Game two was scoreless until the top of the fourth when Marvin Van Buren walked with the bases loaded to send Patric Devlin to the plate and give the Bears (9-7) a 1-0 lead. Devlin had reached base on a two-out single.

The score went to 4-0 in the fourth. After Andrew Hulbert scored from third on a passed ball, Kade Scivicque and Lacoste singled and Devlin walked to load the bases. Anthony Durr then reached base on a fielder’s choice and moved up to second on a throwing error, allowing Scivicque and Lacoste to cross the plate.

The Bears made it 7-0 in the fifth inning when Collin Carroll singled with one out to drive Marvin Van Buren to the plate. Two batters later, Lacoste doubled with two outs to score Hulbert and Carroll.

Delta (7-7) made things interesting in the bottom of the sixth when four hits, a walk and Southwest error allowed them to score five runs with two outs. But, that was to be it for the Trojans as Kade Scivicque took the mound in relief of Gregoire and picked up the save. Scivicque gave up one unearned run on two hits and struck out two.

Anthony Durr had a single and double for the Bears while Brandon Austin also hit safely. Lacoste also added a single.

Delta used a hit, walk, hit batter and Southwest error to take a 2-0 first-inning lead on Crumpler and the Bears in game one of the double header.

The score remained in the Trojans’ favor until the top of the sixth when Southwest broke loose for five runs and a 5-2 lead. Lacoste and Anthony Durr both had one-out RBI singles. With two outs, Austin singled to score two runs. One batter later, Logan Ferrell sent another runner home with a single to right.

Using four hits, a walk and a hit batter, Delta answered with five runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to take a 7-5 lead. The Bears were unable to answer back in the top of the seventh, allowing the hosts to pick up the victory.

Colton Lee gave up two hits and three runs to take the loss in relief of Crumpler. Scivicque also pitched. Lacoste added two more base hits while Scivicque had a double and Carroll a single.

The Bears take a few days off before opening South Division play Tuesday against visiting Jones County. Game one is set for a 2:00 first pitch.
