Lady Bears sweep Meridian

Coming off a sweep at the hands of East Mississippi, the Southwest Lady Bears did a little sweeping of their own Wednesday as they defeated visiting Meridian 5-3 and 9-3. With the wins, the Lady Bears moved to 10-8 on the season.

With the opener scoreless in the bottom of the third, the Lady Bears got on the board when Chelsea Nette led off with a single and later scored on a one-out double by Kristen Gekler. After the Lady Eagles tied the game in the top of the fourth, Southwest went up 3-1 when Marissa Jenkins hit the first of her two homers on the day. Mandie Szigeti scored ahead of Jenkins on the play.

After Meridian tied the game, 3-3, in the top of the fifth, the Lady Bears again used the bat of Jenkins in the bottom of the sixth to pick up what proved to be the final runs of the game. Grace Bravata picked up her second hit of the game and Amy Lea walked to open the frame, Jenkins doubled to left to score Bravata and send Lea to third. Lea then reached the plate on Katie Allen’s sacrifice fly.

Carrie Phillips was the winning pitcher for the Lady Bears. She scattered eight hits over 6.1 innings while striking out five and walking one. Miranda Smith pitched the final two outs of the game.

Gekler doubled twice in the game while Allen and Phillips also hit safely.

Meridian took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first of the nightcap. But, the Lady Bears quickly answered in their half of the inning when Chelsea Nette walked to lead off the frame and later scored on a wild pitch.

Southwest went up 3-1 in the second inning when Grace Bravata led off with a walk and later scored when Mary Margaret McLaurin was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded. Nette then singled to score Allen who had reached with a single of her own.

The Lady Eagles picked up their second run in the top of the third, but Southwest quickly answered when Jenkins blasted a solo homer to centerfield to make the score 4-2. It went to 5-2 in the bottom of the fourth when Brie Harper sent a ball over the fence in right field.

Two more Lady Bears crossed the plate in the fifth inning to put the home team up 7-2. Gekler reached base on an error and Bravata a walk. Both then scored when Allen made it to first base on another error.

After the Lady Eagles scored their final run in the top of the sixth, Southwest answered with their final two runs in the bottom half. With Jenkins and Gekler on base with a one-out single and double, respectively, Phillips singled to send both to the plate.

Rachel Smith picked up the complete-game win for the Lady Bears. In her seven innings, she gave up three runs on only three hits. She struck out five while issuing only one walk.

Jenkins finished the game with three hits while Harper had two. Harley Myers also hit safely.

The Lady Bears return to action Saturday when they travel to Poplarville to open South Division play against Pearl River. Game one is set for a 12:00 first pitch.
