Lady Bears drop doubleheader to visiting Gulf Coast

The Southwest Lady Bears dropped a pair of home games to Mississippi Gulf Coast Tuesday afternoon, falling 7-1 in the opener and 5-1 in the nightcap.

The losses dropped Southwest to 12-14 overall and 2-6 in the MACJC’s South Division. Division-leading Gulf Coast climbed to 22-5, 11-3.

Both teams struggled to find offense in the game one and the game remained deadlocked, 0-0, until the bottom of the fourth inning. Leading off the frame with a walk, Chelsea Nette moved to second on Brie Harper’s single, then to third on a Kristen Geckler sacrifice bunt. She then reached the plate on a wild pitch to give the Lady Bears a 1-0 lead.

Three hits, a Southwest error and wild pitch allowed the Lady Bulldogs to take a 3-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning. The visitors then added the final runs to their total when Lea Kittrell blasted a grand slam to right field in the top of the sixth.

Carrie Phillips took the complete-game loss for Southwest. She surrendered seven runs, three earned, on seven hits. She struck out one batter and issued one base on balls. Katie Allen and Harley Myers singled for the Lady Bears.

Southwest trailed 5-0 before getting on the board in the sixth inning of the finale. Miranda Smith, on base for Harper who led off the inning with a single, moved to second base on a wild pitch then scored when Phillips reached base on an error.

Rachel Smith took the loss for the Lady Bears. She scattered six hits over seven innings and allowed five runs. She struck out 10 batters and walked eight. Harper and Grace Bravata both had three hits in the game for Southwest. Geckler also hit safely.

Southwest returns to action Thursday when they travel to Decatur to face East Central.
