Bears drop two at East Central

The Southwest Bears made the long trip to Decatur Wednesday and dropped a pair of MACJC South Division games to host East Central, 7-2 and 9-2.

Despite being held to only two hits in the opener, the Warriors (11-12, 4-2) were aided by seven hit batters and two Southwest errors in taking a 7-0 lead after six innings.

The Bears (9-15, 0-4) picked up their only runs of the game in the top of the seventh. Shortstop Logan Ferrell was hit by a pitch to lead off the frame and later scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch. A single by catcher Kade Scivicque sent Brandon Austin to the plate for the final run.

Jesse Travis took the loss on the mound for the Bears. Despite allowing only one hit, Travis was touched for four runs. He struck out two batters while also walking two. Chase Ladd gave up only one hit, but gave up three runs. He struck out two batters and walked three. Jared Simon retired all three batters he faced.

In addition to Scivicque’s single, the Bears had doubles from Austin and Frank Rodriguez.

Things looked brighter for the Bears when they took a 2-0 lead after one inning of the nightcap. Austin led off the game with a single and scored on a one-out double by Collin Carroll. Scivicque then followed with an RBI single.

That, however, proved to be all the runs Southwest would get in the game. East Central made it 2-1 in the second inning with the aid of three hits and a hit batter. The Warriors then took a 3-2 lead after three innings. They added five more in the fourth and tallied their final run in the fifth.

Trace Robinson gave up three runs on seven hits through three innings to take the loss for the Bears. He struck out one batter. Colton Lee gave up six runs in relief on six hits. He struck out two batters. J. D. Stockstill gave up one hit while striking out one in one inning on the mound. Austin had two singles for the Bears while Ferrell also hit safely.

The Bears return to their home field Saturday when they host rival Co-Lin in the first round of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge presented by Powerade. The first pitch of game one is set for 2:00.
