Lady Bears sweep Mississippi Delta

Extend winning streak to six games

The Southwest Lady Bears extended their winning streak to six games Friday by sweeping the visiting Lady Trojans of Mississippi Delta. Southwest won the opener 7-0 and came from behind to take the finale 3-2.
 
With the wins, the Lady Bears move to 8-4 on the season. Mississippi Delta fell to 0-6.
 
The Lady Bears got on the board with four runs in the bottom of the second inning. Carrie Phillips led off with a single and scored on a Grace Bravata double. Later, with two outs, Marisa Pruski singled to send Bravata to the plate. Chelsea Nette ended the scoring with a double to score Pruski and Mary Margaret McLaurin. McLaurin was on base via a fielder’s choice.
 
Southwest added two more runs in the third inning to go up 6-0 when Harley Myers and McLaurin both singled to drive in a run. Nette singled in the Pruski for the final run in the bottom of the fourth. Pruski had led off the inning with her second hit of the game.
 
Rachel Smith was the winning pitcher for Southwest. The sophomore right-hander went the distance, allowing only three hits while striking out 10 and walking three.
 
Kristen Gekler had a double for Southwest while Myers singled three times. McLaurin and Phillips both had two hits.
 
The Lady Bears took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second in game two when Myers reached base on an error, stole second and third and scored on a wild pitch. Two errors and four base hits then allowed the Lady Trojans to scored solo runs in the fourth and fifth innings to take a 2-1 lead.

Southwest picked up its final two runs, and the win, in the fifth inning. With the bases loaded, Brie Harper walked to send Pruski to the plate. Then, Gekler hit a sacrifice fly to score Miranda Smith.
 
Phillips pitched five innings to pick up the win for Southwest. Allowing two runs on five hits, she struck out three and walked one. Smith pitched the final two innings, striking out one.
 
Nette had two base hits for Southwest. Myers doubled while McLaurin, Myers and Miranda Smith all hit safely.
 
Southwest returns to the diamond Monday when they travel to Scooba to face East Mississippi Community College. The first pitch of game one is set for 3:00.
