Bears' offensive explosion leads to sweep of Coahoma

 
An offensive explosion led the Southwest Bears to two wins over visiting Coahoma Thursday afternoon. Scoring 11 runs in the bottom of the fifth inning, Southwest took game one 17-4 and they completed the sweep with a 9-0 victory in the nightcap.
         
The Bears (5-3) trailed 2-0 before getting on the board on Brandon Austin’s RBI single in the bottom of the third. Coahoma added two runs in the top of the fifth to extend their lead to 4-1.
 
After struggling through the first 4 ½ innings, everything seemed to fall into place for the Bears in the bottom of the fifth. Frank Rodriguez tripled to drive in a run while Kade Scivicque had a two-RBI double and both Logan Ferrell and Zach Jones had singled to drive in two runs. When the dust had settled, Southwest had sent 17 men to the plate picked up seven hits and used six Coahoma errors to score 11 runs and take a 12-4 lead.
 
For good measure, the Bears added five more runs in the bottom of the sixth to reach their final margin of victory. Patric Devlin scored the first on an Austin ground out. Then, with two outs and the bases loaded, Scivicque blasted a no-doubt, bases-loaded home run over the left field fence for the final runs of the game and giving him six runs batted in for the game.
 
Ferrell and Austin both ended the game with three hits. Austin also had three RBI’s. Jones had two hits and two RBI’s while Kendric Hodges and Andrew Hulbert also hit safely. Collin Carroll also drove in a run.
 
Reliever Jared Simon picked up the win on the mound. On in place of starter Kyle Crifasi, Simon gave up one hit in two innings of work. He struck out three batters while walking one. Crifasi went four innings, giving up four runs on eight hits while striking out five and walking one.
 
Southwest took a 4-0 lead in the first inning of game two. Hodges and Scivicque both singled to drive in a run while Lacoste hit a sacrifice fly to score another and Scivicque reached the plate on an error.
 
Crifasi singled to drive in a run in the second inning while Lacoste scored on an error in the fourth to extend the Southwest lead to 6-0. The final runs for the Bears came in the fifth inning when Lacoste doubled to drive in a run and both Devlin and Scivicque singled to drive in a run.
 
Chris Gill had three hits in the game as did Hodges, Lacoste and Scivicque.
 
Chase Ladd was the winning pitcher for the Bears. In two innings on the mound, Ladd surrendered only one hit while striking out five and walking one.
 
Colton Lee, J. D. Stockstill, Austin White and Jackson Crain combined to throw the final four innings. Each one struck out two batters. Lee walked two while Stockstill have up one hit.
 
The Bears are next scheduled to play on Monday when they host Henry Ford Community College for a 2:00 doubleheader.
