Lady Bears sweep Holmes

The Southwest Lady Bears evened their record at 6-6 Wednesday with a sweep over visiting Holmes Community College, taking game one 2-1 and winning the finale 4-0.Southwest now stands 6-6 on the season and will host Mississippi Delta in a 1:00 doubleheader on Friday.
 
The first game was a pitcher’s duel with Southwest starter Rachel Smith and Holmes’ Kelsey Marter allowing no runs through the first six innings. Smith kept the Lady Bulldogs (2-10) at bay with 10 strikeouts during the same span.
 
Holmes finally ended the scoreless streak in the top of the seventh when Sam Meadows lined a two-out single to score Amberly Young and put the Lady Bulldogs up 1-0.
 
Carrie Phillips then saved the day for Southwest in the bottom of the inning. With two outs, Marisa Pruski on third and Brie Harper on second, Phillips lined a single just inside the line at first base to drive both runners home and give the Lady Bears the win.
 
Smith went the distance to pick up the win for Southwest. Allowing only one hit, she ended the day with 11 strikeouts and did not walk a batter.
 
Grace Bravata and Kristen Gekler both singled twice for the Lady Bears. Harper and Mary Margaret McLaurin also hit safely.
 
The Lady Bears took a 2-0 first-inning lead in game two when Chelsea Nette, on base with a single, scored on a Harper steal of second. Then, with one out, Phillips picked up the first of her two singles in the game to send Harper to the plate. 
Marissa Jenkins drove in the final two runs for Southwest. A solo home run in the second inning made the score 3-0. Then, in the fourth, Jenkins blasted a two out double to left to drive Harley Myers home. Myers had reached on a one-out single.
 
Holmes made things interesting in the top of the seventh when, thanks to a walk, Southwest error and a fielder’s choice, they loaded the bases with no outs. But, Smith came out of the bullpen to save the day. Striking out two, she retired all three batters she faced to save the day.
 
Phillips was the winning pitcher for Southwest. Through 4 1/3 innings, she gave up three hits while striking out two and walking one. Gekler pitched 1 2/3 inning, allowing no hits and walking one.
 
Bravata and Gekler also had hit safely in the game.
