Lady Bears win easily at Hinds

Southwest picked up two much-needed MACJC South Division wins Monday night against Hinds in Utica as the Lady Bears won easily, 69-44, and the Bears came out on top, 75-69.

Southwest closes out the first round of South Division play Thursday at home as they host East Central. Tipoff is set for 5:30 for the ladies and 7:15 for the men.

The Lady Bears (9-6, 2-3) took a 1-0 lead with only four seconds off the clock in the first half and were never headed as they cruised to victory. Behind Katrina Littlepage’s 17 points and Katelyn Whaley’s 11, they took a 41-22 lead into the locker room at the break.

The second half was much like the first, with Southwest going up by as many as 27 points. Hinds’ (2-13, 1-3) poor shooting kept the Lady Bulldogs from coming any closer than 17 points in the final 20:00.

“All in all, I’m really proud of the team effort,” said Southwest head coach Brent Harris. “Katrina had to play a lot of minutes and did really well (and) it was good to get Katelyn back out there and making some shots.”

Littlepage finished with night with a game-high 19 points, and also had six assists, while Whaley closed out with 14. April Levy was also in double figures with 11 points.

Cassie Berry recorded eight points and seven rebounds while Fredrikah Wilson had 10 rebounds to go along with her seven points. Tee Myers registered four points and eight rebounds, while Alexis Avery, Milesha McNulty and Elayne Robinson all netted two points. The Lady Bears were 18 of 28 from the free throw line.

Rajee McDonald led Hinds with 10 points. The Lady Bulldogs were good on 11 of 15 free throws.
