Bears drop game at East Central

Tuesday was a mixed day for Southwest soccer as the Lady Bears defeated host East Central, 2-1, for their second straight win while the Bears fell 2-1 in overtime.

With the win the Southwest women moved to 3-5 on the season while the Lady Warriors fell to 2-7. The Bears dropped to 1-6-1 with the loss while the East Central men are 4-3-2.

The Bears and Warriors were tied 1-1 at the break. Bryan Stewart-Bennett, assisted by Jonathon McGonagle, put Southwest on top 1-0 with a goal at 33:00. The lead held until the 42:00 mark when East Central’s Clint McGraw found the range for a goal.

With no one scoring in the final 45:00, the game went into overtime. The teams appeared destined for a second extra frame before the Warriors’ Russ Thompson managed to sneak the ball past the Southwest defenders and into the goal with less than 1:00 remaining to secure the win.

The Bears’ Will Evans saved seven of the nine shots on goal against him.

The Lady Bears and Bears return home on Saturday for their next contests as they host Northwest. Game times are 2:00 for the women and 4:00 for the men.
