Lady Bears split with rival Co-Lin

The pitching of freshman Rachel Smith and some timely defense helped the home standing Southwest Lady Bears pick up a much-needed 1-0 win in the finale of their South Division doubleheader over arch rival Co-Lin Thursday. Co-Lin prevailed 3-0 in the opener.

Smith scattered five hits in the opener while striking out nine and issuing only two walks. Co-Lin put runners on second and third with one out in the fifth inning, a runner on third with no outs in the sixth and another runner on third with one out in the seventh. But, each time, Smith and the Lady Bears’ defense stepped up a notch to thwart the threat and preserve the win.

Southwest (5-21, 3-13) recorded its only hits, singles by Brooke Szigeti and Tipheri Grimes, in the first inning. The only run of the game came in the third inning when Katie Allen scored from third on a bases-loaded walk to Grimes.

Three walks, a hit batter and a Southwest error helped Co-Lin (14-18, 5-11) take a 2-0 lead in the top of the second in game one. A hit and two errors helped them score the final run of the game in the fifth inning.

Smith surrendered four hits while striking out eight and walking five to take the loss. Szigeti recorded the only Southwest hit, a single, with two outs in the bottom of the seventh.

The Lady Bears return to the diamond Tuesday when they host Pearl River in a 3:00 doubleheader.
