Southwest drops a pair to visiting Co-Lin

It was not a good day for Southwest baseball as the Bears dropped a South Division doubleheader to visiting Co-Lin 5-3 (in eight innings) and 8-1 Friday.

In the opener, Co-Lin took a 3-0 first-inning lead when Jonathan Santana blasted a homer over the center field wall. The Bears tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the fourth when German Hays scored on an Aaron Moore single and Luke Gipson singled to drive Jawon Jackson and Moore to the plate.

The game remained deadlocked until the top of the eighth when Co-Lin (17-14, 4-8) used two walks and a hit to score two runs. The Bears (13-21, 6-8) went down in order in the bottom of the frame to allow the visitors to take the victory.

The loss for Southwest came despite another good outing from sophomore pitcher Zach Rowell. Going the distance on the mound, Rowell allowed only five hits while striking out two and walking two. Moore had two singles on the day while Hays doubled. Connor Goodspeed also hit safely.

Southwest took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning of the finale when Gipson, who had singled with one out, moved to third on a Darron McKigney single and raced home on an Alex Marshall sacrifice fly.

Then came the top of the fifth inning. Scoring eight runs, seven with two outs, Co-Lin went on top 8-1. Singles by Goodspeed and McKigney, in the sixth inning, was all the offense Southwest could muster the rest of the way.
Trey Setzer took the loss for Southwest despite giving up only two runs and two hits in just over four innings of work. He struck out eight batters while walking four. Jared Fiorito and Chase Wilkins combined to give up six runs. McKigney added a third single to his day while Goodspeed added a second. Hays and Kade Scivicque also had base hits.

The games marked the end of the Coca-Cola Baseball Challenge. With their sweep of Friday’s games, the trophy went home with Co-Lin.

Southwest returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Decatur to face East Central. The doubleheader is set for a 3:00 start.
