Bears drop a pair to Jones County

Sophomore Day did not go as planned for the Southwest Bears Wednesday as visiting Jones County went home with 10-3 and 5-3 victories.
 
In the opener, the Bobcats (26-17, 14-7) sent eight batters to the plate in the first inning picking up four hits and taking a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the frame. Southwest (18-26, 9-13) quickly answered as Darron McKigney lined a two-out, bases-loaded single to score Johnny McKenzie and German Hays to tie the game at 2-2. McKenzie had reached base on an error and Hays followed with a single.
 
The game remained tied until the top of the fourth inning when visitors from Ellisville used seven base hits, a hit batter and four Southwest errors to score eight runs and go on top 10-2. The Bears picked up the final run of the game in the bottom of the seventh when Jawon Jackson singled to with the bases loaded to send Matthew Farrar to the plate.
 
Shelby Johnson took the loss on the mound for the Bears despite giving up only two earned runs out of the 10 scored by Jones County. He surrendered 12 hits while issuing on base on balls. Relievers Clint McDaniel, Jeffery Courville and Chase Wilkins also pitched. Chance Schmidt singled twice for Southwest while Kade Scivicque, Wes Gill and Brandon Austin also hit safely.
 
In the finale, the Bears trailed 1-0 before getting on the board in the bottom of the fourth. German Hays put Southwest in the scoring column with a one-out, solo homer to left center field. Two batters later, McKigney walked then moved to third when Connor Goodspeed reached on an error. Luke Gipson then singled to send McKigney home while Austin Terrell’s base hit scored Goodspeed to put the Bears on top 3-1.
 
The lead held until the top of the sixth inning when Jones County used four hits and a wild pitch to score three runs and take a 4-3 lead. They added one more run in the top of the seventh to produce the final score.
 
Scivicque gave up four runs on seven hits through 5.1 innings to take the loss for Southwest. He struck out three batters. Jared Fiorito, Tyler Kendrick and McKigney also saw time on the mound. Aaron Moore also had a base hit.
 
The Bears close out the 2012 season Saturday when they travel to Poplarville to take on the Pearl River Wildcats in a 1:00 doubleheader.
