Bears split with Gulf Coast

The Southwest Bears and Mississippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs split an MACJC South Division doubleheader in Summit Sunday with the Bears taking an 8-7 win in the opener and the Bulldogs prevailing 7-4 in the nightcap.

Southwest (18-24, 9-11) quickly fell behind in the top of the first inning when the Bulldogs (23-19, 11-11) took advantage of two walks, two hits and two hit batters to take a 3-0 lead.

The Bears got the three runs back, times two, in their half of the frame to take a 6-3 lead. German Hays singled with one out and scored later on an Aaron Moore double. With the bases loaded, Alex Marshall was hit by a pitch to force courtesy runner Jawon Jackson to the plate. After Chris Gill singled to drive home another run, Moore scored on a Gulf Coast error. Chance Schmidt then singled to score the final two runs of the inning.

Three hits, including a Hunter Frierson solo homer, and a wild pitch allowed the Bulldogs to score two more runs in the top of the second inning to make the score 6-5.

Southwest got those runs back in the bottom of the fourth when Schmidt led off with a walk and scored on Johnny McKenzie’s triple to right field. Two batters later, Moore recorded his second double of the game to send McKenzie home and make the score 8-5.

Gulf Coast scored two more runs in the top of the sixth, making the score 8-7. Taking the mound with two outs in the top of the sixth, Southwest reliever Darron McKigney ended the Bulldogs rally with a strikeout. He then retired all three batters he faced in the top of the seventh to preserve the win for starter Zach Rowell.
Rowell picked up the win despite giving up five runs on five hits in his two innings on the mound. He struck out one batter and walked two. Clint McDaniel went 3.2 innings on the mound, before making way for McKigney. He gave up two runs on two hits and struck out three batters while issuing two bases on balls. Hays added another single in the game while Marshall also hit safely.

Two base hits, two hit batters and two Southwest errors helped the Bulldogs take a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning of game two. Southwest then tied the game at 2-2 with two of their own with two outs in the bottom of the inning. After Austin Terrell led off the inning with a single, and was replaced by courtesy runner Jackson, Schmidt followed with a base hit of his own. Jackson later scored from third on a wild pitch while Scivicque singled to score Schmidt.

The Bears took their only lead of the game, 3-2, in the bottom of the fourth inning when Luke Gipson blasted a Stuart Holmes fastball for a line-drive home run to left center field. Gulf Coast then answered with three runs in the top of the fifth to regain the lead, 5-3.

With Jackson on base for Scivicque in the bottom of the sixth, the Bears came within a foot of tying the game when Connor Goodspeed drilled a one ball, two strike pitch off the top of the left field fence. Jackson’s run made the score 5-4.

A hit, three walks and a Southwest error allowed the Bulldogs to pick up three more runs in the top of the seventh to reach the final score. McKenzie and Moore both singled with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but the Bears were unable to do any further damage and Gulf Coast escaped with the victory.

Trey Setzer took the loss for the Bears. He surrendered five runs, four earned, off seven hits in four innings and struck out six while walking one. Tyler Kendrick, Scivicque and McKigney also saw time on the mound. Schmidt added a second single in the game while Hays also had a single.

Southwest rounds out the home portion of the schedule on Wednesday by hosting the Jones County Bobcats for a 3:00 doubleheader. The Bears will honor their 17 sophomore in a ceremony prior to the start of the first game.
