Lady Bears fall to fifth-ranked Jones County

The Southwest Lady Bears dropped a pair of close games to visiting Jones County Wednesday with the fifth-ranked Lady Bobcats winning the opener 4-1 and 1-0 in the finale.

Southwest (8-26, 5-17) took a 1-0 lead in the opener when Tipheri Grimes reached base on a single, moved to second on an errant throw and raced home on an Aseye Attipoe base hit.

The lead held until the top of the fifth when Jones County (32-7, 20-2) used a base hit, walk and Southwest error to pick tie the game at 1-1. They then added two more runs in the sixth to go up 3-1 and added their final run in the top of the seventh.

Rachel Smith took the loss for Southwest, giving up five hits while striking out seven and issuing four bases on balls. Brooke Szigeti, Mandy Szigeti, Grace Bravata and Camden Graham all hit safely for the Lady Bears.

Four walks in the first inning allowed Jones County to score the only run of the game in the nightcap. The Lady Bears were held to Katie Allen’s third-inning, lead-off single.

Smith again took the loss despite giving up only four hits. She struck out two batters while walking five.

The Lady Bears close out the season on Friday when they host East Central in a 1:00 doubleheader. A ceremony honoring the sophomore players will be held prior to the game beginning at approximately 12:40.
