Lady Bears split a pair with BRCC

Sophomore Tipheri Grimes hit her ninth homer of the year in the seventh inning Friday as the Southwest Lady Bears defeated host Baton Rouge Community College 4-0 to salvage a split in their non-division doubleheader. BRCC emerged with a 5-1 win in the opener.
 
Southwest (8-24)  took a 1-0 lead in top of the fifth in game two when Mandy Szigeti reached base on a fielder’s choice that allowed Katie Allen to score. Allen had earlier reached on a single.
 
In the top of the seventh, Brooke Szigeti singled and scored on Grimes’ long shot to make the score 3-1. Later in the inning, Allen singled and scored on another single by Mandy Szigeti.
 
Rachel Smith was the winning pitcher. She surrendered only four hits while striking out three and walking five. Aseye Attipoe had a double in the game while Grace Bravata also hit safely.
 
In the opener, the Lady Bears trailed 3-0 before getting on the board in the top of the third. Brooke Szigeti singled and later scored on Grimes’ double for the only run of the game for Southwest. BRCC added two more runs in their half of the fifth.
 
Brooke Szigeti added a second single, and a stolen base, in the game. Bravata had two doubles while Allen recorded a single. Smith took the loss for Southwest despite giving up only five hits. She struck out two batters and walked three. In the two games, Smith ran her pitch count total to 450 over a two-day, four-game span.
 
Southwest begins the final week of the regular season Tuesday when they play host to Jones County in a 3:00 doubleheader.
