Bears drop two to Mississippi Delta

Despite an overall good performance by their hitters and pitchers, the Southwest Bears dropped a doubleheader to Mississippi Delta Wednesday by scores of 3-2 and 5-2. Southwest outhit the Trojans 14-9 overall in the two games combined and 12 Bear pitchers collected a total of 16 strikeouts while issuing only nine walks.

Southwest collected 10 hits, while allowing only three, in the opening game. However, the Bears could not pick up their hits at the right moments as they left 11 runners on base in scoring position. The Bears took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third when Kade Scivicque singled with two outs, moved to second on a Darron McKigney single and scored when Luke Gipson reached on an error.

Mississippi Delta took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fourth thanks to a hit batter, a walk and a base hit. They added their final run, to go up 3-1, in the fifth inning without benefit of a hit as three runners reached base via a walk and a Southwest error.
The Bears picked up their final run in the bottom of the seventh when McKenzie led off with a single and scored on Scivicque’s double.

Reliever Aaron Moore took the loss for Southwest after giving up two runs in the fourth inning. He surrendered one hit while walking one.  McKenzie added two other singles in the game while McKigney also had another single and Jake Martin a double. Chris Gill and German Hays also hit safely.

The Trojans took a 4-0, third-inning lead in the finale as they benefited from two hits, two walks and a Southwest error. Southwest made the score 4-1 in their half of the fourth after McKigney doubled with one out, moved to third on a passed ball and made it home on a Moore sacrifice fly.

Delta’s lead was cut to 4-2 in the sixth when a bases-loaded fielder’s choice scored Martin from third base. Martin was on base in place of Scivicque who had doubled with one out. The Trojans added a solo run in the top of the seventh for the final run of the game.

Trey Setzer pitched one inning in relief to take the loss for the Bears. He gave up four runs, all unearned, on two hits while striking out two and walking two. Brandon Austin had a single in the game while Scivicque also singled.

The Bears take a few days off before returning to the diamond Monday when they host St. Charles (MO) in a 2:00 doubleheader.
