LSU-E takes two from Lady Bears

Southwest dropped a pair of home games to defending national champion LSU-Eunice Tuesday, falling 6-0 in the opener and 5-0 in the nightcap.

The first game was a pitcher’s duel with the Lady Bengals able to take advantage of timely hitting to score a single run in the first inning, two in the third and three in the seventh.

The Lady Bears’ Rachel Smith held LSU-E, currently ranked #1 in the nation, to only five hits while striking out eight and walking four in taking the loss. Logane Fusilier was equally tough for the visitors, holding Southwest (4-12) to a Mandy Szigeti single and double and a Brooke Szigeti single. She recorded 12 strikeouts while issuing no walks.

The Lady Bengals (27-3) took a 4-0 lead in the initial inning of game two and added one more in the second. Pitcher Emily Booth went just under two innings in taking the loss for Southwest. Singles by Brooke Szigeti and Tipheri Grimes were the only offense the Lady Bears could muster.

Weather permitting, the Lady Bears are set to host Baton Rouge Community College beginning at 12:00 this afternoon.
