Bears drop two to BRCC

A late-game rally fell short for the Southwest Bears Wednesday as they dropped the second game of a doubleheader to visiting Baton Rouge Community College 5-3. BRCC took the first game 4-0.

The Bears trailed in the finale 5-0 before their bats came alive in the sixth inning. Leftfielder Johnny McKenzie led off the frame with a single before moving to second on an error and scoring on German Hays’ double. Two batters later, shortstop Darron McKigney walked. He and Hays then scored on a double by Austin Terrell.

Southwest put the tying runs on base in the bottom of the seventh when Jake Martin led off with a double and McKenzie followed with a one-out single. But, the final two batters were retired allowing BRCC to escape with the win.

Kade Scivicque went five innings on the mound to absorb the loss for Southwest (2-6). He allowed all five runs on seven hits while striking out three and walking two. Jared Fiorito struck out three batters in just over two innings in relief. Jeffery Courville also pitched. McKenzie added a single and walk to his day while Luke Gipson hit safely twice.

In the opener, neither team could get anything going until the top of the fourth inning when a hit, two walks and two Southwest errors allowed BRCC (6-8) to score all four of their runs

Trey Setzer went three innings on the mound to take the loss for the Bears. He gave up four hits and one earned run while striking out two and walking three. Jason Milton struck out five batters and walked only one in four innings of relief. Southwest was limited to three hits in the game, a double and single by Scivicque and a Hays single.

The Bears return to the diamond Sunday afternoon with a 2:00 doubleheader against Faulkner.
