Lady Bears end 2012 with a 65-55 win over Delgado

Southwest ended the 2012 portion of the basketball schedule on a high note Tuesday as they swept visiting Delgado. The Lady Bears prevailed 65-55 while the Bears won a high-scoring affair, 108-99.

With the wins, both Southwest teams go into the Christmas break with 5-5 overall records (they are both 0-2 in the MACJC’s South Division).

The Lady Bears took an early 2-0 lead on Fredrikah Wilson’s layup, but Delgado (8-5) quickly came back and take a 6-2 lead. The Lady Dolphins later stretched their lead to seven points, 14-7, with 12:22 left in the opening half.

Not giving an inch on their home court, the Lady Bears then outscored the visitors from New Orleans 18-9 to go up 25-23 on April Levy’s three-pointer with 4:44 on the clock.

With the score knotted at 29-29 and time winding down, it appeared the teams would go to the locker room tied at the break. But, Delgado had other ideas as Raven Lyons scored off a defensive rebound with 0:05 on the clock to give the Lady Dolphins a 31-29 lead at halftime.

After tying the game, 33-33, on Tee Myers’ free throw early in the second half, the Lady Bears later took a 34-33 lead on Katrina Littlepage’s free throw with 16:19 left in the game. It was a lead Southwest would not relinquish the rest of the way.

Extending their lead to as many as seven points, 51-44, on a free throw from Wilson with 4:56 left in the game. Southwest then virtually traded baskets with the Lady Dolphins the remaining minutes of the game before achieving the final margin of victory on another free throw, this one from Milesha McNulty, with 0:05 left in the game.

“I thought Tee and Alexis (Avery) gave us great minutes off the bench,” said Southwest head coach Brent Harris, “and our team defense got enough stops late (in the game). April Avery played well again.” Harris then thanked “everyone for their support” and wished fans “a Merry Christmas from the Lady Bears.”

Levy led the Lady Bears with 17 points while Myers came off the bench to score 12. Avery netted nine points while Littlepage and Wilson both also had nine. McNulty added seven points in the game while Chicurial Hill recorded two. Southwest made good on 27 of 35 free throws.

Delgado was led by Raven Lyons’ 16 points. The Lady Dolphins were three of six from the charity stripe.

After taking time off for Christmas and the New Year’s holidays, Southwest returns to the court on January 8 when the host the men and women of Mississippi Delta.
