Lady Bears pick up win over visiting Holmes

Southwest split a non-division doubleheader with visiting Holmes Monday night, winning the ladies’ game 58-48 and falling 78-70 in the men’s contest.

The first half of the women’s game was all Southwest.  A Katrina Littlepage basket off a turnover ended a game-opening 11-0 run for the Lady Bears (4-3). A Dasha Adams free throw with 15:29 to play in the half finally put Holmes (3-5) on the board, 11-1.

Southwest later increased their lead to18, 30-12, on Katelyn Whaley’s three-pointer with 5:27 on the clock. The Lady Bears then took a 32-17 advantage into the locker room at the end of the half.

Slowly, but surely, the Lady Bulldogs crept back into the game in the second half. When Tamia Grady nailed a free throw with 5:13 left in the game, the Southwest lead had been cut to five points, 44-39.

But, it was not to be for the visitors as a Chicurial Hill free throw put the Lady Bears on a 10-1 run to increase their lead back to double digits, 54-40, with 3:43 to play. Holmes was unable to come any closer than the 10-point final deficit the rest of the way.

“I’m very proud of the win (and) proud we took a few charges” said first-year Southwest head coach Brent Harris. But, he said, “we have to keep our focus when our opponent makes a run and (we) have to play with more confidence offensively.”

Hill had 14 points, on 5-7 from the field and 4-6 from the free throw line, to lead the Lady Bears’ offense in the game. Fredrikah Wilson had 13 points and nine rebounds.

Whaley scored nine points on the night while Littlepage had eight and April Levy seven. Elayne Robinson netted three points while Cassie Berry and Tee Myers both registered two. Southwest hit nine of 17 free throws.

Grady’s 19 points and DeNesha Dillard’s 12 paced the Holmes offense. The Lady Bulldogs were good on 11 of 21 free throws.

Southwest opens MACJC South Division play Thursday when they host Jones County. Game times are 5:30 for the ladies and 7:15 for the men.
