Lady Bears drop road game to Delgado

Southwest split a pair of non-division road games in New Orleans Tuesday as the Bears outlasted the host Delgado Dolphins 87-84. The Lady Bears were defeated by Delgado 60-47.

The first half of the ladies’ game was a low-scoring affair as both teams struggled to find the basket and neither registered a point in the final 3:27. After Southwest (3-3) took an early 2-0 lead on April Levy’s jumper, the Lady Dolphins (5-2) then came back to go up 8-3 with 15:36 left in the half.

The Lady Bears, however, battled back to go up 14-12 on Katelyn Whaley’s three-pointer with 7:17 on the clock. a Chicurial Hill layup with 3:27 proved to be the last points of the first half and gave Southwest a 176-14 lead at the half.

It appeared early in the second half as if the Lady Bears had things well in hand as they extended their lead to eight points, 24-16, on Tee Myers’ two-pointer with 18:57 left in the game.

But, Delgado refused to go away quietly and they slowly battled their way back. Lindsay Green’s bucket with 11:26 to play tied the game at 34-34. Green then gave the Lady Dolphins a 36-34 lead with 10:13 left in the game and they were never headed the rest of the way.

Seeing their deficit grow to 11 points, 47-36, with 7:17 to play, the Lady Bears battled back to within six points (47-41) on Hill’s free throw at the 5:54 mark. But that, however, proved to be as close as Southwest could get the remainder of the way as Delgado pulled away for the 13-point win.

“I was very concerned going into this game with the (Thanksgiving) break coming up,” said Southwest head man Brent Harris. “I don’t know if we understand,” he went on, “how hard it is going to be to win on the road and we have to learn how to do that.”

“We did not have a high level of energy (tonight),” he went on “and we dug too deep a hole to climb out of. But, we have some practice time coming up (the teams return to campus Saturday) and we have to turn a page and get better.”

Hill, Katrina Littlepage and Fredrikah Wilson all had nine points to lead the Lady Bears in scoring. Cassie Berry, Tee Myers and Elayne Robinson all scored four points while Whaley had three. Alexis Avery and Levy both netted two points while Milesha McNulty had one. Southwest hit 13 of 22 free throws.

Raven Lyons had 16 points and Markeisha Keller 11 to lead Delgado. The Lady Dolphins hit 10 of 15 free throws.

After taking time off for Thanksgiving, Southwest returns to the court Monday when they host Holmes Community College. Game times are 5:30 for the ladies and 7:15 for the men.
