Bears ease by Delgado

Southwest split a pair of non-division road games in New Orleans Tuesday as the Bears outlasted the host Delgado Dolphins 87-84. The Lady Bears were defeated by Delgado 60-47.

After falling behind 3-0 on a Mikel Henry three-pointer, the host Dolphins (5-4) went on a 15-4 run to take a 15-7 lead with 14:23 left in the first half of the men’s game. Southwest (4-2) then went on a 20-10 run of their own to take a 27-25 lead on Mark Bridgewater’s trey with 8:46 on the clock.

From there, the teams battled back and forth with five ties and two lead changes. The final lead change of the half came when a Bridgewater free throw put the Bears on top 42-21 with 1:43 to play in the half. Southwest then carried a 47-45 lead into the locker room at the break.

The second half was another nip and tuck affair with four ties and four lead changes. After knotting the game at 48-48 with 18:19 left in the game, the Dolphins took a 49-48 lead on Brian Elphage’s free throw and maintained their advantage for the next 10:12.

The Bears regained the lead at 71-70 when Bridgewater fired in another three-pointer with 8:17 on the clock. Falling behind 77-74 with 4:44 to play, the Bears then regained the lead for good at 79-77 on a Donovan Ross bucket with 3:47 on the clock. Bridgewater sealed the deal with a free throw with only 0:01 to play.

“I’m really proud of our team’s mentality on the road at what may be the toughest play to play in our region,” said Southwest head coach Casey Carter. “It’s always good to get that first road win. That way, we can draw back on it in the ones to come.” The Bears are now 1-2 away from home.

Deville Smith led five Bears in double figures, and all scorers, with 23 points on the night. Bridgewater netted 17 points while Henry, Quintarius Porter and Ross all had 12. Christopher Lawrence added six points while Devin Flowers registered five. Southwest made good on 21 of 26 free throws.

Davis had 21 points while Patrick Gales had 19 to pace the Delgado offense. The Dolphins hit 15 of 22 charity shots.
After taking time off for Thanksgiving, Southwest returns to the court Monday when they host Holmes Community College. Game times are 5:30 for the ladies and 7:15 for the men.
