Bears suffer road loss at Hinds

Jerome Stewart hauls in one of his six catches against Hinds

Finding themselves in a 17-0 hole at the end of the first quarter, the Southwest Bears were unable to dig themselves out as they dropped a 38-14 MACJC South Division road game at Hinds Thursday night.

The loss put Southwest at 0-5 on the season and 0-3 in the Division. The Eagles ended a three-game losing skid to move to 3-3 on the year and 1-3 in the South.

The Eagles built a 17-0 first quarter lead on a five-yard Quadarias Mireles touchdown run, Tyler Poe field goal and eight-yard scoring pass from Anthony D’Angelo to Mireles. Poe booted two PAT’s.

After exchanging punts in the second quarter, the Bears found themselves in another hole at the Hinds’ six-yard line. But, freshman quarterback Turner Easterbrook quickly found a way out of the hole as he tossed a short pass to Korey Jones who did not stop until he had reached the goal line, 94 yards away, with 6:29 left in the first half. Paul Johnson’s PAT ended the first-half scoring with Hinds on top 17-7.

Southwest tried once more to climb out of the hole in the third quarter. Taking the ball at their own 48-yard line, the Bears needed only eight plays to reach the end zone. Easterbrook completed the drive with an 18-yard scoring pass to Jerome Stewart with 7:43 to play. Johnson kicked the extra point to make the score 17-14.

That would prove to be as close as the Bears could come, however. D’ Angelo tossed his second touchdown pass of the night, a 44-yarder to Quantavius Leslie, with 0:16 to play in the third. Poe’s extra point made the score 24-14 with 15:00 left to play.

In the final quarter, Risean Broussard intercepted an Easterbrook pass and returned it 15 yards for a touchdown with 9:57 on the clock. Then, with 4:58 to play, Mireles raced 52 yards for his third score of the night. Poe added both extra points.

“It was the same song, different verse,” said Southwest head coach Charles Anthony. “Defensively, we continue to give up big plays. That is the result of poor tackling. You can’t win when you can’t tackle.”

“Offensively,” he said, “we fumbled the ball several times. We recovered, but still lost yards. We botched another field goal. We just made too many mistakes. If we can clean them up, we can win games. We do play hard and fight to the end (but) we just don’t always play smart.”

The Bears totaled 353 yards of offense on the night. Easterbrook completed 20 of 41 passes on the night for 381 yards and two touchdowns. He was picked off twice. Jones caught five passes for 182 yards and a score while Chris Cooley had six receptions for 101 yards. Stewart had six catches for 84 yards and a touchdown. The Southwest running game was held to -28 yards on the night.

The Bears picked up 18 first downs in the game, 13 via the pass. They were penalized eight times for 58 yards. Justin Holt punted five times for 42.8 yards.

Hinds finished the game with 312 yards of offense. D’ Angelo led the way with 17 of 25 passing for 206 yards and two touchdowns. Mireless carried the ball nine times for 93 yards and two scores. He also caught six passes for 36 yards and a touchdown while Leslie had eight receptions for 152 yards and a score.

The Eagles registered 14 first downs in the game and were penalized seven times for 35 yards. Pate DeMuth punted four times for 42 yards.

Southwest returns home on October 13 as they celebrate Homecoming 2012 with a 5:00 game against Mississippi Gulf Coast.
