Bears take 4-3 win over Co-Lin to sweep the season series

Southwest closed out the 2012 soccer season on a high note Wednesday as they swept arch-rival Co-Lin in Wesson. The Lady Bears won easily, 9-1, while the Bears escaped with a 4-3 victory.

With the win, the Southwest women finished the season with a 5-9 overall record; they were 2-6 in the MACJC’s South Division. The Bears ended the campaign at 3-9-2 and 3-4-1 and were only one win from a spot in this week’s state playoffs.

The Bears took a 4-0 lead, but had to hold on for the win as Co-Lin scored three goals late. Jake Saltalamacchia scored, with an assist from Tanner Ryals, to put Southwest on top 1-0 at 31:00. Saltalamacchia then provided the assist as Bryan Stewart-Bennett scored to move the lead to 2-0 at 37:00. Saltalamacchia scored unassisted at 44:00 to give the Bears a 3-0 lead at the break.

The score went to 4-0, as Saltalamacchia completed the hat trick with his third goal at 63:00 with Destin Beech assisting. Co-Lin’s offense then came to life and made a game out of it. Goals by Austin Graham, at 68:00 and 75:00, brought the hosts back to within two goals at 4-2. Emilio Collado then added a goal at 83:00. But, that proved to be the last gasp for the Wolves as Southwest claimed the season sweep.

Southwest keeper Ryan Willcutt saved all three shots on goal against him in the first half before giving way to Will Evans.
