Derrick Mount

Saucier, Mississippi, native Derrick Mount is back for his second stint as assistant coach for the Bears baseball team. He will work with the hitters and infielders and serve as recruiting coordinator.
 
Mount previously served as a Southwest assistant in 2019-2022. He returned to Summit after spending two seasons as an assistant at the University of South Alabama.  Prior to that, he spent two season as assistant coach and camp coordinator at his alma mater, Southeastern Louisiana University, under head coach Matt Riser.
 
Mount is a graduate of Harrison Central High School and was baseball team captain as a junior and senior. As a senior pitcher/infielder, he helped the Red Rebels to an MHSAA 6A South State title. He hit .511 with 11 doubles, two triples and a home run, while driving in 20 runs and scoring 46. On the mound, he turned in a 5-1 record with an ERA of 0.90 while striking out 60 batters in 39 innings of work. He was also team captain his final two seasons with the team.
 
After his senior season at Harrison Central, Mount was named 1st Team All-State and Coast Player of the Year. He was also selected a Coast All-Star and to the Crossroads All-Star team.
 
After high school, Mount played at Pearl River Community College where he also pitched and played infield. As a freshman, he tallied a .345 batting average with an on-base percentage of .435, 12 doubles and two triples. He also drove in 32 runs and scored 32 while stealing 16 bases.
 
Named a team captain as a sophomore, he as named All-Region after batting .368  with 12 home runs, 40 runs scored 41 runs batted in and 19 stolen bases. On the mound, he pitched 24 innings to post a 1-3 record with two saves.
 
Mount finished his collegiate career at Southeastern. He started 35 of 40 games played in his initial season with the Lions. He recorded eight doubles, three homers, 21 runs batted in, 19 runs scored and five steals. He had eight games of at least two hits and four of at least two runs batted in.
 
He spent limited time on the mound in 2016, but held opponents to a .184 batting average while posting a 1-1 record two saves. His first save came in a 4-2 win over the University of Southern Mississippi. He was the winning pitcher in the Lions’ 7-6 win over 25th-ranked Tulane.
 
As a senior, Mount hit .301 with eight doubles, two triples, five home runs, 28 runs batted in, 40 runs scored and 23 bases on balls.
 
Mount graduated from Southeastern in 2017 with a Bachelor’s degree in General Studies. He is currently working toward a Master’s degree in Sports Administration from Arkansas State University.
 
He is married to the former Leighton Freeman of the McComb. The Mounts are the parent of a daughter, Emerson Ray.
