Bear defense shuts out Hinds in the second half

Box Score Southwest Football hosted Hinds on Thursday, September 17th for game four of the season.

Hinds won the coin flip and deferred to receive the ball in the second half.

The Bear offense struggled in the first half while Hinds scored on all three of their first three drives to go up 17-0 over the Bears with 11:26 left in the second quarter.

The Southwest defense then forced three straight punts from Hinds to go into halftime trailing 0-17 to the visiting division opponent.

The Bears opened up the second half with a fourth down stop against Hinds as the defense picked up where it left off at the end of the second quarter.

The third quarter remained scoreless for both teams as they entered the fourth with Hinds still leading 17-0 over the Bears.

Southwest started the fourth quarter with the ball near midfield and continued to drive down the field and finally put points on the board with a 32-yard field goal make from Simon Naylor to move the score to 3-17 in favor of Hinds.

The teams continued to trade punts until the Bear offense finally got rolling with 4:09 left in the game.

On a crucial 3rd and 22, Jakhari Williams completed a 29-yard pass to Bryhsen Smith to get a first down near midfield for the Bears.

On the very next play, Williams completed a pas to Tahj Williby that Williby then took 45-yards to the house for a touchdown, his second of the season.

After the extra point was good, the score was now 10-17 with Hinds leading, and the Bears had found some life.

With 0:59 left in the game, the Bears were forced to attempt an onside kick that was unfortunately recovered by Hinds.

With only two timeouts remaining, Southwest needed a miracle to get the ball back.

Hinds would run out the clock and throw the ball high in the air on the final play to seal the win as the clocks hit 0:00.

The Bears move to 1-3 (0-1*division) on the season and will be on the road to face Pearl River on Thursday, September 24th.

Jakhari Williams finished the game with 265 passings yards, 1 touchdown, and 2 interceptions.

Zay Martin led with 78 receiving yards on 4 receptions. Tahj Williby followed with 74 receiving yards on 4 receptions with 1 touchdown. Next, Bryhsen Smith had 73 receiving yards on 6 catches.

Ronde Baker led the team with 34 rushing yards.

Alan Long had 6 punts for 198 yards with 3 inside the 20-yard line.

Keena Galloway Jr had 3 kickoff returns for 53 yards. Kainen Rush had 1 kickoff return for 38 yards.

Albert Sparkman and Caleb Bryant each had 1 sack in the game.

Jordan Magee batted a pass. Kemon Folse and Kavion Newson each had a pass breakup, and Newson's saved a touchdown.

The Bears will look to bounce back next week against the Pearl River Wildcats.
