Lady Bears sweep home opener

Southwest Mississippi Softball played Baton Rouge Community College on Tuesday, February 24th for their first home games of the season, winning 12-9 and 7-6.

The Lady Bears won game one 12-9 in an offensive shootout.

Allie Ladnier started on the mound for Southwest and picked up the win. Ladnier pitched 6 innings with 1 strikeout.

Tye Boone came in in the seventh to get the save for the Lady Bears.

Southwest had a huge second inning scoring 6 runs.

Allie Ladnier opened up the inning with a solo homerun.

Kate Clements doubled then scored on a Bailey McLin single. Lauryn Roebuck scored next on a Corin Talbot double.

A Jana Phillips double scored Bailey McLin and Corin Talbot. Phillips would go on to score on an Alexis Dejean single to close out the scoring for the inning putting the Lady Bears up 7-0.

Southwest would follow up with a 3-run third inning.

Kate Clements opened up the third with a solo homerun.

The other two runs came from a runner scoring on a Corin Talbot single and on a Jana Phillips single to put Southwest up 10-1.

The Lady Bears would score their final 2 runs in the fifth inning when Madalyn Ashford scored on a Jana Phillips ground ball followed by Mary Claire Salley scoring on an Alexis Dejean single.

The Lady Bears would go on to thwart a comeback winning game one 12-9

Kate Clements (HR, x2 2B), Corin Talbot (x2 2B), and Jana Phillips (2B) all had 3 hits in game one. Alexis Dejean and Bailey McLin each had 2. Allie Ladnier also had a homerun.

Jana Phillips had 5 RBIs and a stolen base in the game.

Southwest would go on to win another close one in game two winning 7-6.

Corin Talbot started at pitcher for Southwest pitching 6 innings with 6 strikeouts and picking up the win.

Ballard Kraft came in for the seventh inning to pickup the save for the Lady Bears with 1 strikeout of her own.

With a come from behind win after being down 2-6, the Lady Bears scored 2 runs in the third inning and 5 runs in the sixth inning to take the lead over Baton Rouge.

Both third inning runs came from an Alexis Dejean double that scored Corin Talbot and Jana Phillips.

Down 2-6 in the sixth, Kate Clements doubled to get into scoring position for the Lady Bears. A Bailey McLin single and Corin Talbot walk loaded the bases for Southwest. Then a Jana Phillips single scored Clements and McLin to move the score to 4-6.

In the next at bat, Alexis Dejean hit an eventual game winning 3-run homerun to take a 7-6 lead over Baton Rouge.

Ballard Kraft came in in the seventh inning to get the final 3 outs and seal the win for the Lady Bears.

Alexis Dejean led the way for the Lady Bears in game two with 5 RBIs on 2 hits with one being the game winning homerun. Jana Phillips had 2 hits and the final 2 RBIs for the team. 

Bailey Mclin and Allie Ladnier each had 2 hits as well. Both of Ladnier's hits were doubles, and Alexis Dejean and Kate Clements both had a double as well in game two. 

"Total team effort. Super proud of the fight these girls gave. Super excited about what this team has accomplished and can't wait to see what's ahead," said Head Coach Shea Johnson, "I also would like to thank my two assistants Larry Lippert and Callie Venable for all the hard work they do to make this team successful. I could not do it without them!"

"I would like to also thank our administration for supporting our team. It was great to have Dr. Bishop travel back all the way from Jackson to throw out our first pitch! Last but not least thanks to our fans for a great home opener," said Coach Johnson.

The Lady Bears (10-3) will travel to Camden, Arkansas on Friday and Saturday, February 27th-28th to play Southern Arkansas University Tech in a four-game series.
