Dominant first half leads to Bear win

Southwest Mississippi Men's Basketball played the Coahoma Tigers at home on February 9th in a 72-63 win to improve to 6-2 in conference play.

The Bears came out in a display of pure dominance to start the game against the Tigers.

Quickly getting out to an 8-0 lead with a Cy Merrett slam setting the tone, the Bears showed no sign of slowing down.

The defense showed out in the first half, keeping the Tigers scoreless for the first 5:00 of the half and later going on a scoreless stretch of nearly seven minutes.

The Bears held Coahoma to single digits in the first half taking a 30-9 lead into the halftime break.

Southwest continued the scoring into the second half, but the Tigers finally woke up.

As the Coahoma offense began to answer, the Bears had to adjust to the full court press the Tigers switched to.

The switch in strategy led to 25 free throws for the Bears in the second half, which they made 17 of.

The Bears stayed hot on offense with a Chidi Nwosu slam followed immediately by a Nwosu block turned Courterius Scott bucket.

Courterius Scott and Cy Merrett commanded the offense for Southwest in the final 6:12 of game time scoring in 6 of the last 7 scoring opportunities for the Bears.

The Bears finished the night with a 72-63 win while only having 2 three pointers on the night.

Courterius Scott led the team with 19 points. Cy Merrett and Chidi Nwosu put up 16 points each and the pair combined for 14 made free throws.

"We've got to just continue to take care of business at home. And then on the road we've got to clean it up, we've lost two in a row on the road. We have to lock in and make sure we are locked in and ready to go," said Head Coach Corey Schmidt.

The Bears (12-12, 6-2*conference) look to keep the momentum going on the road as they travel to Booneville on Thursday, February 12th to take on Northeast Mississippi.
