Lady Bears open Region XXIII tourney play with 72-56 win over Holmes

The Lady Bears began their quest for a NJCAA Region XXIII tournament title Wednesday night with a 72-56 win at home over the Lady Bulldogs of Holmes Community College.
 
With the win, the Lady Bears moved to 9-4 on the season while Holmes ended the year with a 6-10 mark.
 
The game was close throughout most of the opening quarter. Holmes held an early 3-0 and was in front 10-7 with 3:20 on the clock.
 
A Taylor Ben layup and Sydni Tangle three pointer served as bookends to a 10-0 run by the Lady Bears to close out the quarter to send them into the second quarter with a 17-10 advantage.
 
Outscoring Holmes 10-4, the Lady Bears increased their lead to 27-16 on a pair of Shylia McGee free throws with 6:53 left in the second quarter. They then took their largest lead of the half, 31-19, on Ben's jumper with 5:04 showing.
 
Holmes outscored the Lady Bears 9-5 to close out the half to leave the Lady Bears with a 36-28 lead.
 
The second half belonged to the Lady Bears. A jumper by Ben put the them on top 47-30 with 6:43 left in the third quarter and they would go on to lead 55-41 with one quarter still to play.
 
After Holmes pulled to within 57-46 with 8:25 left in the game, the Bears went on a 9-0 run and took their largest lead of the night, 66-46, on a Mikayla Etienne jumper with 6:31 to go. They would go on to win by win the game by 16 points.
 
"Our focus and preparation for this game was excellent," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We got going in transition offensively, everyone was dialed in and competed in every way. It was a good day for Southwest."
 
Etienne led all scorers with 22 points in the game. Ben, McGee and Tangle each finished with 11 points.

The Lady Bears hit 11 of 19 free throws.
 
Jordyn Manning paced the Holmes offense with 14 points. She and her teammates combined to make 10 of 16 free throws.
 
The Lady Bears hit the road for their next tournament contest, traveling to Clarksdale on April 5 to face the Coahoma Lady Tigers. Tipoff is set for 6:00.
