The Lady Bears' quest for an MACJC tournament championship came to an unfortunate end Wednesday night in Scooba as the host East Mississippi Lady Lions emerged victorious, 62-53, in the semi-final round.

Despite the loss, the Lady Bears have qualified for next week's NJCAA Region 23 tournament.

After the Lady Bears (17-8) took an early first-quarter lead, East Mississippi looked ready to put the game away as they led by as many as 12 points before taking a 16-6 advantage into the second quarter.

The Lady Bears were not willing to go quietly into the night and began a comeback in the second quarter. A Jolie Williams layup started an 8-3 spurt by the Lady Bears that trimmed their deficit to 19-16 with 3:07 on the clock.

A D'Mya Wilson bucket then helped the Lady Bears score the final five points of the quarter to send the teams into intermission deadlocked at 21-21.

The Lady Bears took their second lead of the game, 23-21, on a Shylia McGee jumper with 8:49 left in the third quarter. The teams would trade baskets the rest of the quarter before East Mississippi (23-2) scored the final four points to take a 34-30 lead into the final 10:00 of play.

The Lady Bears scored seven straight points to open the fourth quarter to take what proved to be their final lead of the night, 39-38, with 7:07 remaining.

East Mississippi then went on a 15-1 run to move out to a 53-40 lead, from which the Lady Bears were unable to recover, as they claimed the win and moved into the tournament title game.

"We obviously struggled out of the gate," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "But, we showed some heart in the second quarter to battled back."

"D'Mya led a big push in the third (quarter), but we had some costly turnovers and (East Mississippi) hit some big shots late to pull away. It was a great effort by our group."

Wilson led the Lady Bears' offense in the game with 15 points. Williams netted 14 points and McGee totaled 12.

The Lady Bears went 19-31 at the free throw line.

East Mississippi's Tye Metcalf led all scorers in the game with 24 points. She and her teammates combined to make 16 of 21 free throws.

The Lady Bears will open play in the Region 23 tournament on March 4th against LSU-Eunice at a time not yet determined.
