The Lady Bears solidified their place as the 2nd seed from the MACJC South in next week's MACJC tournament with a regular-season ending 58-53 win at East Central Thursday night.

The win left the Bears with an overall regular-season record of 16-7 and 9-5 in the South. East Central ended the season at 10-13, 5-9.

The Lady Bears fell behind early, 5-1, before ending the first quarter on a 10-3 run. A Daisy Wansley bucket left them with an 11-8 lead heading into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, a Jade Myles layup and two free throws from D'Mya Wilson served as bookends to a 14-3 run that left the Lady Bears on top 28-15 with 4:47 on the clock. They extended their lead to 35-21 at intermission.

The Lady Bears seemed on the verge of putting the game out of reach in the third quarter when a pair of free throws and a jumper from Shylia McGee put them on top 41-21 with 7:44 on the clock. They would lead 47-32 at the end of the quarter.

The Lady Bears led 50-40 with 5:51 left in the game. East Central then made a comeback attempt, scoring 13 of the next 21 points to pull to within five points, 58-53. That, however, proved to be the last gasp for the hosts as they Lady Bears won by the same score.

"The coaching staff is extremely proud of this group of young ladies," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We finished second in our division to the (7th-ranked) team in the country (Jones). To do this with one returner (from last season) and 10 freshmen is really special."

"Tonight," Harris continued, "we found enough stops defensively. Jade made some big plays offensively and Daisy and Aliyah were really good tonight. We also had several battle through injury and sickness for their teammates."

Myles led all scorers with 13 points in the game. The Lady Bears made 16 of 26 free throws.

Makaila Carter and Jeriyah Covington both scored 9 points to lead East Central. East Central combined to go 8-9 at the free throw line.

The Lady Bears open MACJC tournament play on Tuesday against the North's 3rd seed, Holmes Community College. Game time will be announced sometime Friday.
