Lady Bears open 2020 with close loss at BRCC

Jolie Williams

Women's Basketball | 1/4/2020 6:16:00 PM

The new year did not get off to the best of starts for the Lady Bears Saturday afternoon as their six-game winning streak came to an end at Baton Rouge Community College, 55-52.

Both teams showed the effects of the holiday break in the early going. Two minutes went by before a Jolie Williams free throw put the Lady Bears on top 1-0.

Later, a Jolie Williams trey and an old-fashioned three-point play from Williams left the Lady Bears with a 19-6 lead as the first quarter came to a close.

BRCC pulled to within five points twice in the second quarter, but the Lady Bears were able to answer each time. A late pair of free throws from Williams sent the Lady Bears into intermission with a 29-21 advantage.

The teams traded baskets through most of the third quarter before BRCC took a 40-39 lead late. But, with time winding down, Williams nailed a three pointer at the buzzer to put the Lady Bears back on top, 42-40, with one quarter remaining.

The Lady Bears (7-2) took a 47-41 lead with 7:27 to play in the game. An 8-2 scoring spurt by BRCC (3-10) then knotted the contest at 49-49 with 3:07 to go.

With 1:31 on the clock, the Lady Bears held a slim 52-49 lead. Unfortunately, the final six points of the game would go on the BRCC side of the scoreboard allowing them to capture the win.

Williams scored 14 points to top the Lady Bears' offense. Tangle was also in double figures with 11 points. The Lady Bears hit 13 of 17 free throws.

BRCC's Antiesha Griffin led all scorers with 15 points. She and her teammates made 12 of 15 free throws.

The Lady Bears make their 2020 home debut on January 6 with a 3:00 matchup with Mississippi Delta.
