Behind the 28-point, season-high performance of sophomore Jolie Williams, the Lady Bears overcame a slow start to defeat the host Hinds Lady Bulldogs Thursday night in Utica, 69-59, in MACJC South Division play.

Williams went 10-18 from the field, including 8-10 from three-point range.

Hinds took an early 5-0 lead in the first quarter before the Lady Bears got on the board with a Jade Myles three pointer. The teams traded baskets the remainder of the quarter before Hinds took a 15-10 lead into the second quarter.

A 9-2 run, capped by a Williams trey, gave the Lady Bears (13-4, 6-2) their first lead of the game, 19-17, with 5:11 left in the second quarter. The game was tied three times the rest of the quarter before a late bucket by Taylor Ben left the Lady Bears on top 28-26 going into intermission.

The Lady Bears exploded for a 17-3 run to start the third quarter. Another Williams trey capped the run and gave the Lady Bears their largest lead of the game, 45-29, with 3:03 on the clock. Hinds scored the final four points of the quarter leaving the Lady Bears with a 45-33 lead with one quarter still to play.

Outscoring the Lady Bears 14-7 to open the fourth quarter, Hinds (2-11, 0-8) trimmed their deficit to 52-47 with 6:13 still left to play. A 10-0 run, capped by yet another Williams trey with 3:44 on the clock, pushed the Lady Bears' lead back to 62-47.

Hinds outscored the Lady Bears 12-7 to close out the game, but it was too little too late as the Lady Bears left town with the win.

"We found a way to get a road win," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "Obviously, Jolie had a special night and we needed it. We were not as focused on our defensive assignments as we would like."

Williams' performance, which included eight three pointers, led all scorers in the game. The Lady Bears went 9-15 at the free throw line.

Amaz Carmichael topped the Hinds offense with 16 points. She and her teammates were 8-10 at the free throw line.

The Lady Bears return home for their next game as they host Meridian Community College on February 3, at 5:30, in South Division action.
