The Lady Bears got their season off to a roaring start Saturday afternoon at Baton Rouge Community College as they upset the NJCAA's 5th-ranked Division II team, Illinois Central, 79-60.

An old-fashioned three-point play by Jolie Williams gave the Lady Bears their first lead of the day, 10-7, with 5:30 left in the opening quarter. They then took their largest lead of the quarter, 13-7, on a Daisy Wansley free throw with 4:18 on the clock. The Lady Bears then took a 17-11 advantage into the second quarter.

After having their lead trimmed to 20-16 early in the second quarter, a Williams bucket and pair of free throws helped the Lady Bears outscored Illinois Central to take a 34-22 lead with 6:24 on the clock.

Back-to-back jumpers from D'Mya Wilson and Shylia McGee then put the Lady Bears up 45-30 with 3:13 left in the half. They then took their biggest lead of the day, 59-40, on a Wansley layup with 0:23 on the clock and they carried a 59-45 lead into intermission.

The second half also belonged to the Lady Bears as they maintained a double-digit lead the entire final 20:00 of play to claim the win.

"We are very proud of our effort and focus today," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "Obviously, (with it being) game one, there are several areas that need improvement. Defensive rebounding, shot selection and team defense are at the top of the list."

"Jolie made some shots and made some things happen defensively," Harris continued, "(and) D'Mya gave us a big spark in the second half."

Williams topped the Lady Bears' offense with 18 points. McGee and Wilson were also in double figures with 14 and 11 points, respectively. The Lady Bears made good on 14 of 18 free throws.

Raven Overman led Illinois Central in scoring with 11 points, She and her teammates went 11-14 at the free throw line.

The Lady Bears travel up I-55 to Senatobia for their next contest as they take on the Northwest Mississippi Lady Rangers on November 5. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:00.
