Rachel Thompson

The Lady Bears gave it their best shot Wednesday afternoon, but in the end it was not quite enough as the Northeast Lady Tigers prevailed 64-60 in the opening game of the NJCAA Region 23 tournament in Clinton.

With the loss the Lady Bears closed the 2017-18 season with an overall mark of 18-7. Northeast moved to 17-8 and advanced to the tournament semi-finals.

The game was back and forth from the start with six lead changes and three ties in the first quarter. The biggest lead for the Lady Bears, 8-5, came with 5:15 on the clock after a
Keturah Bingham layup. Northeast took its biggest lead, 15-12, with 2:57 on the clock.

Rachel Thompson's bucket with 1:05 left before the half tied the game at 17-17, but Northeast scored the last four points of the quarter to take a 21-17 advantage into the second 10:00 of play.

The Lady Bears found themselves down 30-23 with 6:25 left before halftime. But, an 11-2 run to close the quarter, capped by a
Danyelle Lewis three pointer, allowed the Lady Bears to take a 34-32 lead at the break.

The third quarter was much like the first two with three ties and three lead changes. Northeast built a 42-38 lead with 6:11 on the clock before the Lady Bears came back to knot the score at 46-46 on
Amari Pittman's trey late in the quarter. The score remained deadlocked with the fourth quarter still to come.

Two
Peyton Papenburg free throws tied the game at 49-49 with 8:03 left to play. Northeast then scored six straight to go on top 55-49 with 6:01 to go.

The Lady Bears refused to give up, pulling to within 62-60 on Papenburg's three pointer with 0:10 on the clock. That, unfortunately, would be it for the Lady Bears as a pair of Northeast hit a pair of free throws with 0:06 on the clock and held on for the win.

"We were outmatched a little (on the) inside," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris, "(and) they hurt us on the glass." Harris said the Lady Bears final record "is a nice year" and that "only one team is going to end the year with a win, as far as teams go."

"This group of sophomores (Papenburg, Thompson, Bingham,
Kacie Fountain and Lewis) has been first class," Harris went on, "and I'm glad to see (that) a lot of them had big runs today; we wish them the best. Hopefully we can at least match this (the team's record) or do better next year."

Lewis led the Lady Bears' offense with 15 points while Papenburg and Thompson were also in double figures with 13 and 10 points, respectively. The Lady Bears went 15-26 at the free throw line.

Aundrea Adams and Cherelle Jones both scored 16 points for Northeast to lead all scorers. As a team, Northeast made 13 of 20 free throws.
