Lady Bears win fifth straight in dramatic fashion

Amari Pittman nailed a three-pointer with 0:01 on the clock Monday night to give the Lady Bears a dramatic 60-59  MACJC South Division win over the host Pearl River Lady Wildcats. It was the Lady Bears' fifth straight victory and gave them the season sweep over Pearl River.
 
With the win, the Lady Bears moved to 15-3 overall and 6-3 in the South. Pearl River fell to 11-6, 4-5.
 
The game was tight from start to finish with 11 ties and 13 lead changes. After the Lady Bears took an early 2-0 lead, the teams battled to an 11-11 tie at the end of the first quarter.
 
In the second quarter, a 10-4 run by the Lady Bears, capped by a pair of
Danyelle Lewis free throws, left them on top 21-15 with 6:19 before halftime. Pearl River then went on to score 14 of the final 20 points of the half to take a 29-27 lead at intermission.

Rachel Thompson layup, with 9:11 left in the third quarter put the Lady Bears on top 32-29. Then, with 5:49 on the clock, a pair of Keturah Bingham free throws gave the Lady Bears a 34-30 advantage. After two ties and two lead changes, Bingham's jumper with 0:44 showing left the Lady Bears with a 40-38 lead with the fourth quarter still to come.
 
Pearl River outscored the Lady Bears 17-10 in the first 6:12 of the fourth quarter to take their biggest lead of the game, 55-50, with 3:48 left in the game.
 
A pair of Pearl River free throws, with 0:12 on the clock, seemed to seal the game for the hosts as it gave them a 59-55 lead. Then, the magic happened for the Lady Bears. After
Jamaya Galloway laid the ball in the goal to make the score 59-57, Peyton Papenburg stole the ball on the inbounds pass. She then made a quick pass to Pittman who calmly fired the ball through the net to allow the Lady Bears to escape with the win.
 
"I am very proud of our team for fighting through some tough situations and finding a way to win on the road," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "Rachel had a huge offensive rebound off a free throw. Jamaya made a tough layup to set up the ending when Peyton made a great steal at the end and found Amari in a scramble. But, Kaci (Fountain) was a true leader all night and kept our energy high."
 
Pittman had 13 points to lead the Lady Bears. Bingham netted 11 points while Thompson scored 10. Fountain registered seven assists. The Lady Bears hit 14 of 22 free throws.
 
Rehema Franklin paced the Pearl River offense with 13 points. The home team was 4-5 at the free throw line
 
The Lady Bears look to continue their winning streak Thursday night when they host the Meridian Lady Eagles in South Division action.. Tipoff is set for 5:30.
