Women's Basketball | 2/16/2018 12:15:00 AM

Once again, the Lady Bears and Co-Lin battled to the very end, but, unlike their previous meeting, the Lady Bears were unable to come out on top as they fell 55-53 in the MACJC South Division contest in Wesson.

With the loss, the Lady Bears fell to 16-5 overall and, at 7-5, remain in third place in the South. Co-Lin moved to 18-3 and 9-3.

Co-Lin took an early 4-0 lead in the first quarter before buckets from
Rachel Thompson and Keturah Bingham helped the Lady Bears knot the game at 6-6 with 3:38 on the clock. Free throws from Jamaya Galloway then left the Lady Bears trailing 12-10 at the end of the quarter.

The teams traded baskets through most of the second quarter, resulting in a pair of ties and five lead changes. Co-Lin took their largest lead of the first half, 14-10, with 9:37 before the end of the half.

Layups from Bingham and Thompson then put the Lady Bears on top 223-19 with 1:34 on the clock. They then took a 23-21 lead into the locker room at intermission.

Outscoring their hosts 9-4 to open the third quarter, the Lady Bears went on top 32-25 with 5:01 left. A pair of Galloway free throws then put them ahead 42-32 with one quarter still to play.

The Lady Bears seemed to have things well in hand when, with 9:45 left in the game, a pair of
Ty Lee free throws gave them their largest lead of the game, 45-32.

Co-Lin had other ideas, however. Going on a 14-2 run, Co-Lin took a 54-51 lead with 0:21 still to play. A Bingham jumper made the score 54-53 with 0:07 to go, but Co-Lin would hold on for the narrow victory.

"I'm obviously disappointed in the outcome," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris. "We have to learn to push the lead instead of just get by. On a positive note,

Tootie Carter was outstanding and Ty Lee gave us a spark late (in the game)." With two games remaining in the regular season, Harris said, "We still have a lot to play for next week."

Bingham and Thompson both scored 13 points to lead the Lady Bears' offense (Thompson also pulled down 10 rebounds for a double-double). Kacie Fountain recorded seven assists. The Lady Bears made good on 15 of 20 free throws.

Alexus Holt scored 20 points for Co-Lin to lead all scorers. She and her teammates went 13-19 at the free throw line.

The Lady Bears play the first of two season-ending home games on Monday when they host Hinds at 5:30.
