Lady Bears lose tough one at Mississippi Delta

The Lady Bears suffered a tough loss on the road Monday night as they fell to the host Mississippi Delta Lady Trojans, 76-71, in Moorhead.
 
An Amari Pittman layup helped the Lady Bears move out to a 13-6 lead with 4:46 left in the first quarter. But, the Lady Trojans would close out the quarter by scoring nine of the final points to take a 17-15 lead into the second quarter.
 
Aided by a Pittman three point shot, the Lady Bears outscored their hosts 7-4 to open the second quarter and take a 22-21 lead with 7:46 left before halftime. The Lady Trojans then came back to score 13 of the final 19 points of the quarter to take a 34-28 advantage into the locker room at intermission.
 
With the Lady Bears (2-4) trailing by eight points in the third quarter, they received buckets from Pittman, Tootie Carter and Tootie Rankin to pull to within 40-39 with 5:39 on the clock. A 10-0 run then put the Lady Trojans (2-5) back on top, 50-39, with 2:15 showing. A pair of late free throws from Jamaya Galloway left the Lady Bears down 52-46 heading into the fourth quarter.
 
A pair of free throws from Carter closed out a 21-12 run for the Lady Bears to open the final quarter that knotted the game at 69-69 with 2:46 left in the game. With the game tied at 71-all, the Lady Trojans then used a two free throws and a three pointer to close out the narrow win.
 
"We must start competing with more heart," said Lady Bears head coach Brent Harris following the game. "We are losing every 50-50 play right now. If this team wants to win, they must compete for each other."
 
Galloway and Pittman both scored 16 points to lead the Lady Bears' offense. Carter was also in double figures with 10 points. The Lady Bears were nearly perfect at the free throw line, making 10 of 12.
 
The Lady Trojans' Erika Faulkner led all scorers with 18 points. She and her teammates hit 13 of 22 free throws.
 
The Lady Bears return to action, and open MACJC South Division play, on December 3 in Utica as they face the Hinds Lady Bulldogs. Tipoff is set for 5:30.
