Bears split home doubleheader with Pearl River

The Bears overcame a three-run deficit to defeat the visiting Pearl River Wildcats 5-4 in game one of their MACJC doubleheader Tuesday afternoon. The Wildcats achieved a split when they scored a run in the top of the eighth of the nightcap to get a 7-6 win.

A walk and single led to a 1-0 lead for Pearl River in top of the second inning in game one. The Bears made it in the bottom of the frame when
Chance Groue led off with a single and scored two batters later on a Crishaun Speight base hit.

The visitors would score single runs in the top of the third, fourth and fifth innings to move out to a 4-1 lead.

The Bears (13-18, 2-14) made it 4-2 in their half of the fifth when
Brantley Hughes doubled to left field with one out and scored on a Pearl River error.

The Bears completed their comeback with three runs in their half of the sixth. Groue doubled to lead off the frame (he would later add another double and earlier had a second single) and scored on an
Alex Smith sacrifice fly.

A Hughes single, allowed Speight, on base via a walk, to score the tying run (Hughes also had a second double in the game).
Andrew Beesley, on base with his second hit of the contest, scored what proved to be the winning run on a bases-loaded walk to T Tez Cole.

Carr Young pitched 6 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on seven hits and four walks to get the win. He struck out two batters. Tyler Pigott struck out two batters, and gave up one hit, in one inning of work to get the save. John Marcus McDowell had a single for the Bears.

A walk to Beesley and
Scooter Ginn's sacrifice fly gave the Bears a 1-0 first-inning lead in the finale.

Pearl River (19-9, 10-4) scored four runs in the top of the fourth and two more in the top of the sixth to take a 6-1 lead.

The Bears made a game of it in the bottom of the sixth, scoring four runs to pull to within 6-5. Beesley's bases-loaded single scored Groue and McDowell. Errors later in the inning allowed Beesley and Smith to cross the plate.

On base for
Austin Moen, who had doubled for his second hit of the game, Smith knotted the game at 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh when he scored on another Pearl River miscue. With the Bears unable to score an additional run in the inning, the game moved into the eighth.

Pearl River used a walk, sacrifice bunt and single to score what proved to be the winning run in the top of the extra inning. They then retired the Bears in order in the bottom of the frame to escape with the win.

Sy Odom took the loss on the mound for the Bears, giving up an earned run on one hit and a walk in two innings. He also struck out one batter.

Groue had two singles in the game.

The Bears remain at home for their next games, hosting the Itawamba Indians Friday. The conference doubleheader is set for a 2:00 first pitch.
