Bears split home doubleheader with Delgado

Payton Yawn's one-out single in the bottom of the seventh inning scored Isaiah Davis with the winning run as the Bears captured a 4-3 win over the visiting Delgado Dolphins in game one of their Saturday afternoon doubleheader. The Dolphins came back to take game two, 10-1, to get the split.

Game one was scoreless until the bottom of the fourth when Brantley Hughes reached base on a fielder's choice and scored three batters later on a Ray Hutchinson line-drive single to centerfield that put the Bears (7-3) on top 1-0.

Using a single and pair of doubles, the Dolphins took a 2-1 lead in the top of the sixth. The Bears answered with Scooter Ginn's two-out solo homer over the leftfield fence in the bottom of the frame that knotted the game at 2-2.

A fielder's choice and base hit resulted in a run, and a 3-2 lead, for the Dolphins (10-4) in the top of the seventh. Then came the bottom of the inning. Zach Thomas and Davis started the frame with back-to-back singles. After an error helped the Bears load the bases, Thomas scored the tying run thanks to another error. Yawn then stepped to the plate send Davis home with the game-winner.

Gerald Groue pitched one inning in relief to record the win for the Bears. He gave up an unearned run on one hit and a walk while striking out a batter.

The Bears trailed 6-0 before Hughes, on base with his second hit of the game, scored from third on a passed ball to make the game-two score 6-1 in the bottom of the sixth. That was as close as the Bears would get, however. The Dolphins added four more runs in the top of the seventh to close out the scoring.

Carr Young took the loss on the mound for the Bears, surrendering five runs (one earned) on four hits and four walks. He struck out three batters.

"I thought our kids played extremely hard in game one," said Bears head coach Ken Jackson. "I was very proud of the way we responded late in the game and came back and won it in walk-off fashion. That's a sign of guys playing hard."

"In game two," Jackson continued, "I thought we exposed ourselves a little bit, being so young. I thought when we fell behind we just kind of lost focus on what we were trying to do and we made some errors and took a punch and never really responded to it. That's the sign of youth. That happens and we'll bounce back and get ready for our next ball game."

The next game for the Bears is March 7, at 6:00, when they are set to host arch-rival Co-Lin, in a non-conference affair, that serves as round one of the Coca-Cola Challenge presented by Powerade.
