Bears get 33 hits, 29 runs to sweep host Louisiana College JV

Exploding for 29 runs and 33 hits, the Bears remained undefeated at 4-0 on the young season with a 19-7, 10-1 doubleheader split over the Louisiana College Wildcats JV squad Saturday afternoon in Pineville, LA

Game one saw the Bears take a 6-0 lead in top of the second inning.
T Tez Cole got the ball rolling for the Bears with a two-RBI double. Payton Yawn later added three runs with a bases-loaded single, the first of his three hits in the game; he later scored on a ground out. The Wildcats scored a solo run in the bottom of the frame to make the score 6-1.

The score went to 10-1 in the top of the third thanks to
Ray Hutchinson's two-run homer over the left field fence and a two-run single from shortstop
Brantley Hughes.

Five runs from the Wildcats in the bottom of the third and another in the bottom of the fourth narrowed the Bears' lead to 10-7.

The Bears put the game out of reach with seven runs in the top of the fifth.
Isaiah Davis sent two runners across the plate with a double. John Marcus McDowell later drove a pair home with the second of his three hits in the game; he later scored on a throw following a Cole single and Cole later scored on a ground out. Hutchinson added an RBI double.

Hughes' leadoff single in the sixth, followed by a
Scooter Ginn double increased the Bears' lead to 18-7 (Ginn also had two singles in the game). Hughes closed out the scoring in the top of the seventh with an RBI double.

Sy Odom picked up the win on the mound for the Bears, giving up three runs on a hit and three walks. Andrew Beesley had two singles in the game and
Zach Thomas doubled and walked three times.

The Bears took a 1-0, first-inning lead in the nightcap when Beesley led off with a single and scored two batters later on Hutchinson's base hit.

The score went to 4-0 in the top of the second. Cole got things started with a leadoff homer to right field. McDowell followed with the first of his two hits in the game. Moving to second on a steal and to third on an error, that put Yawn on base, McDowell scored on a steal of home. Yawn later scored on the first of two Hughes base hits.

Two more runs crossed the plate for the Bears in the third inning. Hutchinson led off the frame with a double, moved to third on the first of Ginn's two hits in the game and scored on a Cole sacrifice fly. Ginn later scored an error to increase the Bears' lead to 6-0.

Crishaun Speight made the score 7-0 in the sixth inning when he led off with a triple to centerfield and scored on a Beesley fly out. Speight's two-out RBI base hit and Beesley's two-run single ended the Bears' scoring and left them with a 10-0 lead after the top of the seventh.

The Wildcats avoided the shutout in the bottom of the seventh, scoring a run on three hits and a walk.

Carr Young went five scoreless innings on the mound, allowing four hits while striking out three and walking three, to get the win for the Bears.

At the end of the day, Bears head coach Ken Jackson said "There are three phases of the game-defense, hitting and pitching. Today, our pitching struggled a little bit at times, but they came through when we really needed (them to). Our hitting was very good today and I thought we played pretty good defense overall."

Expanding his thoughts on his team's hitting, Jackson said, "We got a lot of hits today and we hit the ball pretty hard. I thought it was pretty good for our young team to have some success at the plate."

The Bears return to the diamond on February 22 with a 2:00 doubleheader against the LSU-Alexandria JV.
